Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

I've been calling for a Spags disciple sense Wilks has been fired. I like the idea a lot. Let me go read up on this guy.
Recently this guy has helped create a lot of good DB's. Hope this isn't just a rooney rule interview.

HoneyBader
Justin Reid
Snead and MCduffie
Ward

Seems like i'm missing somebody.

Thoughts on that? Thought they were more focused on non DB DC, but if he's anything like Spags sign me up

Always good to poach from your #1 impediment.

he's been their db coach since 2019 and has obviously been fantastic in that role.

I like it.

Has he been fantastic?

What don't you like about his body of work in that role?

Uh, yeah. Charvarius Ward, Sneed, etc. none of those guys were slam dunks in the draft.

He's helped coach up Ward, Snead, McDuffie, Reid, and others, all of whom have excelled since he's been there. KC has built and developed a really fantastic secondary.
Looks like he was Spags' left-hand man except for the Rams. Was there for both of the Giants Super Bowls and all the Chiefs Super Bowls.

My only question is why he hasn't been a coordinator thus far? He's apparently a very well respected DB coach, won multiple SBs with the Giants, won three with the Chiefs thus far but he's never been a particularly hot name to be DC. Even when Spagnuolo took the Rams job he didn't bring this guy along.

So what have all these other teams being thinking that no one has yet seen fit to make him a coordinator despite an impeccable resume?

It's extremely rare for someone to have been an assistant as long as he has and to go on to be a coordinator. Even more rare to have success doing it.

The 49ers don't play that game, they just want the best candidate for the job, and are not focused on superficial aspects.

Well, to be fair, Vance Joseph had to wait 16 years for his opportunity too.

Absolute no to Ron Rivera. HELLLLLLL no.

Outside of Jim Schwartz, the dream scenario would be Dave Merritt with Bill Belicheck as a defensive advisor a la Vic Fangio. There's no way Bill takes a DC job, but a part time gig as an advisor might make sense professionally for him at this stage in his career.

As for Merritt:
Played LB collegiately and in the NFL - Shanahan talked about the defense operating operating through a LB perspective.

Was on the coaching staff for the Giants during both superbowl wins over the Patriots

Has been DB coach under spags with the chiefs since 2019.

20+ years NFL coaching experience, not old, and nets a comp pick if poached.

Problem is, he has been vocal about wanting to stay put until his kids are grown. His kids are 15 and 18 I think, so it's unlikely, but maybe the right offer makes him think 15 is old enough. This is the only reason he has never been promoted.

Yessssss
