Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

Everyone saying Staley wouldnt be a good DC because the Chargers weren't a good defense when he was the head coach, what about when Marvin Lewis was head coach of the Bengals? He was the DC for that great Baltimore team that had arguably the best defense ever but when he became HC of the Bengals i never remember the Bengals being a great defense in his tenure. He finished in top 10 in defensive yards only 4 out of 16 years as HC of the Bengals.

Were you impressed with the Broncos defense under Vic Fangio? I wasn't.

I'm not for or against Staley but i dont take much stock when one of these good coordinators fail when they get their shot at HC.

Nothing set in stone but I wouldn't mind his as an assistant to be groomed as a future DC. I just want a reputable name and resume at DC

All valid but my concern with Staley would be that he supposedly played favorites and alienated players during his time with the Chargers.

Ray Lewis had his own coaching tree

What don't you like about his body of work in that role?

My only question is why he hasn't been a coordinator thus far? He's apparently a very well respected DB coach, won multiple SBs with the Giants, won three with the Chiefs thus far but he's never been a particularly hot name to be DC. Even when Spagnuolo took the Rams job he didn't bring this guy along.

So what have all these other teams being thinking that no one has yet seen fit to make him a coordinator despite an impeccable resume?

It's extremely rare for someone to have been an assistant as long as he has and to go on to be a coordinator. Even more rare to have success doing it.

All it takes is someone willing to take that chance.... Like when your wife said yes 😂

Merritt was asked about the prospect of a defensive coordinator position back in early January, leading to this gem:

"One of the things that my wife Yolanda and I spoke about decades ago was that, no matter what, I wasn't going to pursue any type of coordinator job while my kids were young," said Merritt. "Meaning, the fact that I wanted to be there Friday night games. I wanted to be there Saturday, if I could, to go to some games. And you can ask my wife, Yolanda. She'll tell you the same thing. So when that time arrives, and if I'm afforded a position to be able to even go interview, I will consult with my wife, and then we will take the next step.

"But right now, I'm focused on trying to make sure that I be the best defensive coach I can be for my guys. A lot of guys think the grass is greener on the other side, and then all of a sudden, you can go chase the money. But I've always told my young coaches that are around me, you want years of service. Years of service is more important than money, because money is going to come and go. It's fleeting.

"Honestly, you take that chair as a coordinator, you're responsible for the entire unit, and now, some of your closeness goes away. And what we experienced in the defensive back room, and even when I was coaching linebackers, that bond that I've had with my players over the decades has been precious to me, and I don't want to lose that right now."

Merritt was then pressed for details on his family, and he revealed that he had children of 33 years, 27 years and 25 years.

"Then my wife wouldn't stop chasing me," smiled Merritt. "So now we have a 15 and a 17-year-old. So we waited eight years, and so I had to start all over again. So right now, we have a sophomore and junior in high school here at Blue Valley, so [I] have a couple more years."

Perhaps that timeline has now sped up — because the right opportunity has arrived.

Sounds like he has a really good perspective on work/life balance. Hard pass - I want someone that neglects their family to devise new ways to stop Sean McVay's offense.

Eric Mangini has a lot of free time.

yes. And the reporting that they would like to have a DC by the end of the week well they didn't say what week. And I don't think it will be this one.

so my question to everybody is that wants Sorensen what is the purpose? Is it continuity? Because he's only been here for two years. Bullocks Has at least been here for 10 to 12 years. of all the candidates that we've interviewed I'm going with Merritt. He's been the assistant to the best defensive coordinator for 10 years straight or arguably the best.

I don't have any special insight. I just see the same possibility happening with Merritt for the defense as when other teams poach offensive assistant from Kyle - you get a particular insight into a proven commodity. For that reason, Merritt makes the most sense to me. Staley doesn't, nor does Sorensen.

No respect for a 3 time super bowl champion I see.
after speaking to Lynch at the combine, Matt Barrows doesnt think Staley is the choice. this is per Kawakami's 49ers +/- podcast

I'm leaning this way as well. I liked the boom or bust potential with Staley, but I'm over it.

We don't even know who the other mystery candidate is…

This was brought up earlier when we started throwing possible under the radar names to go along with the obvious big names.

I think Staley was a long shot candidate and was one of those due diligence type of interviews. Just in case he blew them away in the interview. "Run it back" and "scheme change" do not go hand in hand.
We're taking an elongated approach of time for good reason, we might ultimately end up with Belichick as a consultant (Mike Shannahan is like blood-brothers with him). -Belichick is tied up fighting the good-ole-boys club upstairs for his past sins. The NFLPA/NFL brass does this s**t to senior coaches/HOF career individuals to push them out with their pensions/jackets.

Prolonging the hiring is really cut-throat strategic, and it shows we're serious about going back next February. The worst candidates we interviewed might be Brandon Staley, and Nick. They say Brandon Allen has been peeping in on everything at the facility lately, and that seems quite disturbing (This guy might be leaking the facility sources).

If Belichick ultimately declines, Dave Merritt, or Matt Pricitia (who is out at Philly) are the smartest choices. Matt Pratricia's name came out of a lot of hats after Saleh left. Speaking of which, our biggest weakness under Saleh, Ryans, and Wilks was backfield supremecy. The 49ers and Eagles keep thinking they can get away with having a cheap-ass backfield, and recklessly expensive d-line.
