Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

Everyone saying Staley wouldnt be a good DC because the Chargers weren't a good defense when he was the head coach, what about when Marvin Lewis was head coach of the Bengals? He was the DC for that great Baltimore team that had arguably the best defense ever but when he became HC of the Bengals i never remember the Bengals being a great defense in his tenure. He finished in top 10 in defensive yards only 4 out of 16 years as HC of the Bengals.

Were you impressed with the Broncos defense under Vic Fangio? I wasn't.

I'm not for or against Staley but i dont take much stock when one of these good coordinators fail when they get their shot at HC.

We're talking about Staley and ONE yr as a DC prior, in a Covid year…why didn't McVay go hire him as soon as Morris was hired as a HC?

im not comparing him to those other guys.

All valid but my concern with Staley would be that he supposedly played favorites and alienated players during his time with the Chargers.

One positive about Staley is longevity, since no team will poach him for a HC job.

Also, Spags was 11–41 as a HC and is a darling now as DC.

Spagnuolo was a SB winning DC that helped shutdown Tom Brady and that ridiculous 18-0 Patriots offense. I don't think Staley is proven anywhere near to that same level.

The point is not to look at a HC record to determine whether a guy is a good DC. Different jobs.

Staley had the Rams defense 1st in ppg and ypg in his only year there before he got poached. McVay is a good coach, makes good hires, and is Shanny's boy so I think it would be a good fit here.
I think the DB coach from the chiefs is an interesting prospect. Idk much about him but he seems to have had great success and seems like a great guy.

No idea how he would do, or what the scheme would look like, but he's intriguing.

Wasn't that the guy who didn't even know who Aiyuk was after the superbowl? Likely he was coasting of Spags' nuts.

Right but when you look at their actual schedule and who they played as well as all the talent on that roster, it doesn't look quite that impressive.

Also the Rams had a shot at hiring him back and didn't give him the time of day.

Beyond that, there's not a scheme match. You'd either need to invest in some new personnel and change up the defense or potentially repeat the Wilks mistake and get Staley to call something different then he has up to this point.

When Spagnuolo's D helped beat 18-0 Tom Brady they had the #17 defense in points given up and #7 in yards (which included blowing a 28-16 lead to NE losing 38-35). So not actually all that impressive.

Dude called Shanny out on his BS playcalling and inability to call a good offensive game.

He just went way up on my rankings for who should be DC, certainly higher than Bullocks or Sorensen.

Kyle don`t seem to be that type of guy to take constructive criticism ,maybe if he did he would score more points in a critical game instead of getting out to a 10 point lead and thinking his D can and should hold that 10 point lead for the rest of the game same s**t he did 2019 against the same QB....Kyle is stubborn as a Missouri Mule
