Who will be the Niners new DC?-Rooney Rule Now Applicable

A coach like Vrabel will have his own defensive ideas which he will want to implement. He is not going to listen to Shanahan to change to comply with the 49ers status quo defensively. And after seeing Wilks being scapegoated for the SB loss, it will be harder to attract quality DCs with experience. I think this will likely be an internal hire.

He is not being scapegoated for the SB. There is plenty of other reasons....

Is George Siefert still around.
Of those options, I'd guess Flores. His defense stumped us this year, so Kyle hires him to learn how to beat those types of defenses. Macdonald ran a similar one in Baltimore, destroyed us, and now coaches Seattle, it would behoove Kyle to learn how to beat it. Also, sets us up for a comp pick. Vrabel wouldn't get us one.

100 percent. Questions about Wilks have been present all year long. There were just a group of people who refused to accept or see that it was an issue.

Now it's being confirmed that it was. Too bad we didn't have the SB win, because it was probably happening anyway. Now it will just be cast aside as a scapegoating when it pretty clearly isn't.
James J. Schwartz is going to be available. He only signed a one year deal with Cleveland and he has not been extended. They literally run the exact same scheme as the 49ers just much better.

he might be the only name that would want to take the job.

imo Vrabel is coming off a place where folks have good opinion of him. Doing alot, with little. Beating top teams with the talent he had...garbage QBs he had.

for him to come to us, and have to do things Kyle's way?... and potentially lose credibility if our defense struggles? he'll be in Wilks situation next year. Scapegoat!

Bill Belichick? LOL he ain't taking this job to be under the spoiled kid of Mike Shanahan.

You might struggle to hire an accomplished, yet recently fired, HC to be a DC here… but let's not pretend this isn't a desirable job. The reason Wilks was here in the first place was because the two previous guys were hired as HC's by other teams.

Nobody is going to scared off because Wilks wasn't a good match and we sent him out of here.

Lol, can you imagine being scared off from joining a defense that just went to the Super Bowl and has a cupboard full of talented players. That the dream coordinator job. That's a HC maker job, or a career reviver job.

The Vikings would block that.

The same Gym Shorts that just got the Coordinator of the Year award?

I believe the browns retained him for another year?
I wouldn't count out the Pete Carroll choice either, could see him bringing in Sherman as DB coach as well

Phoenix brought up a good point—why didn't he get promoted last offseason?

Their preference is clearly to stay in house and the finalists last year were two guys from outside the organization. I don't believe anything has changed in the last year.

You can be an experienced assistant coach and still not be seen as someone that would be a strong playcaller. Same thing for the Merritt guy from KC that everyone keeps bringing up. He's been an assistant for 20 years and has yet to get a coordinator look.

If I had to guess, they didn't think he was ready for the job. Whether he is he now is the question. He is relatively young for a coach 40 with 7 years of NFL coaching experience. The other question is whether he has the skills to scheme up the front seven, or is he strictly a DB guy? If he is the choice, he fits the profile in many ways young and energetic, Again if he learned from Saleh and DeMeco how to operate the front, and Kyle is satisfied that he is a seasoned enough coach, he may prove to be a very strong choice for D.C.
