Report: Brandon Staley is set to join Kyle Shanahan's coaching staff

A day after Kyle Shanahan stated that his coaching staff wouldn't see any departures, two of his assistants left the team. Steve Wilks was fired as the club's defensive coordinator following a poor performance in the Super Bowl against the Chiefs.

Travis Kelce believes Kyle Shanahan made a mistake in Super Bowl overtime

With Wilks' exit, there's a vacancy for the defensive coordinator role in San Francisco. Several rumors abound regarding who will take the job, but now it seems like one option is emerging as the frontrunner in this race.

According to ProFootballTalk, the San Francisco 49ers have selected Brandon Staley as their new defensive coordinator. There's a strong feeling in the league that the team will anounce his arrival in the upcoming days.

Why are we citing Bolavip.com? That's not even what PFT said, all they claimed was that he was a strong rumored candidate.

The only positive about getting Staley would be that no team will hire him as a HC for quite some time. He's gonna get the McDaniel treament

He kind of seems like the defensive version of Shanahan. He can design a defense better then almost anyone, but he needs the right plays to execute it. If he cant figure it out here, he probably isn't getting another shot as a coordinator job.

If I recall, Thl said Staley's system got figured out fast and now gets sliced up.

He can design a defense better than almost anyone? Lmao. Based on what? 1 season with the Rams or the 70 plus one of the worst teams in the NFL dropped on him?

Seeing so many rumors that it's gonna be Staley.

I am starting to wonder, is he just a horrific head coach but I DC wizard like Spags?

Problem I have is Spags still had a terrible Rams team in the top half on D when he was HC.

Brandon never ranked higher than 20 despite all that talent.

Blah to Staley

OTC said there were a number of rumors about him. Here's another.

I'd recommend being skeptical of all of these.

Didn't say he was producing good defensives with the Chargers. Just said he was really good as designing plays. I mean was Shanahan bad when the offense wasn't scoring points in 3 of his first 4 years or did he not have the players to execute it? I would like to think a coach like him would do well with the talent the 49ers have on defense. I like his odds better then any position coach being brought up. No coach available now is going to be perfect.

Like any system that begins to spread around the league, OCs come up with ways to defeat it, and of course it's a copycat league.

Gap scheme runs to beat the 1.5 gapping DL. Late presnap motion to confuse pass defenders that are playing with zone match principles. The offense still needs talent to beat it, but in terms of concepts and ways to attack it, offenses know and have been studying it for 3-4 years now.

I posted this earlier but I think this is why the defense didn't do well in LA

"Players detailed how Staley and his defensive staff would try to build in answers and rules for every minute facet of opposing offenses — every route, every motion. At times, players said, this bogged down the unit as a whole...Staley's inexperience was exposed in this stubborn commitment to a defensive vision that simply was not working. There was a disconnect between how some players wanted to play and how Staley wanted to play"
