He was also a special teams coordinator for Jacksonville and was the defensive passing game coordinator for the 49ers last season.
Dark horse DC candidate if they stay internal.. Nick Sorensen. Highly respected inside the building by coaches and players. Thought to be a key reason the 49ers pass D has seen a significant improvement, including generating INTs since 2022.

Leave it up to Mike Silver to always ruin my mood.
Honestly, in-house was always my first guess with Kyle. Especially now.
I mean Silver is saying what other nfl coaches think, not really what he's hearing from SF.
wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens, I just find it weird. They're gonna hire the guy that couldn't beat out Wilks? Why not hire him last year?
I'm with you.

I also find it interesting that the rumor is that it's an "in house" candidate. It tells me that the Shanahan wants to micro manage the defense as well. He likes working with coaches with no previous coordinator experience. How many times did you see him undermine Wilks last season. Just happened a week ago.
Kye runs this...never mind.

I believe he'd put his neck on the line for this defense.
I assume the race between Sorenson and another DC candidate is neck and neck.

I just don't buy that any internal hire is a top candidate to replace Wilks. For one, it's not a good start to try and win back fans when they're blaming you for losing the Super Bowl. Two, if its taking you this long to hire a DC only to settle for an internal hire, it tells me he was the plan C or D and couldn't really get the coach you wanted. Again not a good start if you're trying to win back the crowd, which he should be. Another blunder at DC and the natives will really start to get restless.
Maybe I'm being ridiculous but when fans and media start noticing s**t, coaches are removed from the booth and put on the field.
Win back fans? 29 other teams would die and sell their soul to be part of/run like a team like the 9ers.

Internal hire is weird imo. So he wasn't the guy last yr, so you fire the guy that was supposedly better, then hire him?
It would suggest throwing s**t at the wall and seeing what sticks rather than having an actual plan he's confident with.
Or he saw Sorensen succeed in an expanded role as defensive pass coordinator and believes he's ready for more? That's the only internal candidate that somewhat makes sense to me.

Well he has one quality for a DC, that would work for Kyle... he already looks like a Goat.
