Its not surprising that long term secondary coaches would focus primarily on the secondary when it comes to playcalling. DL coaches that move to DC tend to focus upfront to the exclusion of the secondary which leads to a lot of vanilla on the back end.
I think LB coaches have the best balance in that they have to focus both on coverage and rushing the QB. Saleh and Ryans both were far more creative when it came to stunts and traps up front, utilizing the DL creatively. Similarly a DC like Spagnuolo came from a combined secondary and LB coaching background.
Eberflus, Ulbrich and Gym Shorts. But I don't think Cleveland is letting Shorts go.
