Total Defense: 16th
Passing YPA: 30th
Sacks: T-14th
Passer Rating Allowed: 25th
Third down conversion rate: 30th (A WHOPPING 53%)
Penalties: T-13th
This is inexcusable for having an all pro edge and linebacker, and pro bowl corner with another good corner and DE rushing on the other side.
I know Hufanga just came back, but that's another former all pro back there. Absolutely ridiculous to be ranked near LAST in passing YPA and third down defense.
That is frickin horrible!!! Thank Odom, Campbell, Brown, Yiadom and Sorensen for this mess. Offenses don't give this defense any respect no more, see Sam Darnold and his 99 yard touchdown pass. Sorensen outta be ashamed of himself, Lynch too for neglecting the Safety position.
Quite frankly I think it's coaching and scheme 100%
I have seen zero creativity this year. Have we heard even a single comment from a broadcast team about a nice disguised call? I haven't.
Inexcusable for these results with our talent.
We run one-sided overload fronts for goal line and short yardage. We put strong safeties on WR1s. I've even seen linebackers and DL matched up with receivers sometimes.
We went from one bad play caller to another. Wilks would play guys 10 yards off on 3rd and 2. He had the famous all out blitz with mere seconds left before the half.
We made a change, but Sorensen so far is even worse IMO. He makes idiotic play calls for even larger stretches of the game than Wilks did, TBH.
IMO, I think it's actually both.
After all, the defense mainly the Safeties have been out of position, missing tackles and quite frankly the secondary and LB's have been making dumb ass penalties. You're right though, Sorensen has been uncreative and has shown he's just as bad a play caller than Wilks. But getting back to the players, you can't argue they went cheap in free agency while hoping for big rewards, like they've known to do. That s**t isn't working this year, I would like to see them trade and add some real players. $50 mil in cap space can't all be for Purdy, do something with it dammit!!!!
Maybe they should have gone with Lord Fangio. The Eagles D looks much better. I'm tired of this revolving door at DC. Fangio would not get poached and we would finally have consistency.

I don't know what the answer is. Perhaps more run blitzing on early downs to create pass rushing situations. Maybe run a 5 man front on every play like a lot of teams do. I don't know.
The Vikings show a 7 or 8 man front every down and then switch depending on how the offense responds in their set. The 49ers need to be creative like that. Purdy said they were throwing stuff at him that he had never seen.

These players we rolling out on the field on defense aren't that good if you are being honest with ourselves.
The front 4 has been a total disappointment across the board. So far they all look like average guys. Not sure what happened to Bosa
Every linebacker and safety outside of FW has played below average. Campbell and Odum have been god awful.
Outside of Dmo every CB has played below average. And outside of Dmo and Ward the whole entire CB corp is unknown or just bad players.
No doubt scheme is an issue but we need to look at the FO and ask wtf happened to our d line? They haven't been acquiring good talent in the trenches and it's really starting to show. .

good points, I also think losing Armstead has more of an effect than we thought, just being a leader on the defense. Even though he didn't play as much, he set an example in his preparation and mindset.

Honestly might as well see what Staley got as a play caller than go another year with Sorensen. A little early I know, but for real, do you guys see anything changing in terms of play calling this season with Sorensen?

What was the organization looking or knew about the we didn't, otherwise fangio is the perfect choice over Sorenson as a new coordinator. I know he is a 3 4 guy but Bosa and Floyd could have been upright.
I'm confused why they did not at least look at it.

I am coming around more and more to this line of thinking....
The return on the money spent on the D has not been there.....
Now we have 2 D coordinators that can't get results....sure it might be the system, but odds are it has a root in talent too.
The only glimmer of hope is they might need time. There has been so much public talk about synching all 3 levels on defense, we should expect that to take time and reps...so MAYBE....they can harvest what they are putting into the ground.
When you go back to 2022 and look at that ALL-22 stuff, you can see the D-Line and LBers working in unison on coverage. You can see them trying to control passing lanes. When passing lanes open up, LBers are filling them in... plain as day the idea is to keep underneath coverage on the WRs/TEs.
If the plan is to return to that, it is understandable this can take time, and with sooo many fresh faces...maybe we as fans are jumping the gun a tad too early when it comes to SOME of the coverage stuff...
I don't think there is much of any excuse to be made for getting bombed on. As long as I have known of the game of football, you simply do not let people run over the top of you...period, and of course we can't seem to keep traffic off our LBers when teams run on us....
There is a ton of work to do against the run.
I get the 49ers want a certain kind of DE or DT...I get that..I do....but if they can't get that prototype guy...at some point...you need to just get a dude who can take 10-15 snaps a game and clog the damn middle. Dude might be near useless chasing stretch plays, or on passing downs...so be it...at least start with owning the middle of the field on first down. If you know in advance teams want to neutralize that dude by going wide...it should be that much easier to hold an edge and send people outside against the run.

It is still early but idk, I kinda don't see it happening. I was a bit iffy of the choice. Doesn't seem like a complex strategy type guy...more like the owner of a surf shop. It is what I think of whenever I see him lol
Just a laid back, surfer guy or fly fishing enthusiast.

He absolutely did. But let's look at some of yhe players. Odum is a special teams guy only. I guess they don't trust Mustapha enough. Campbell is just slow. As for our 4 man rush, idk what's going on. But I'd rather just get young guys in there who are still hungry to hunt the QB. Ward just had a bad game. I think we'll get better but until the young guys get up to speed, there won't be any huge difference. Bare minimum, we need to be better on 3rd down and disciplined with the penalties.

Bingo.
But our fan base still call it "the best roster in the league"

Agreed on everything. This is where they just have to try to scheme better and get off the field. Gotta be able to dial up some sort of pressures with Bosa and Floyd coming off the edge.

My thing is even with the weaknesses, you had Bosa, Floyd, and Hargrave. All 3 of those guys can't rush the passer anymore? I don't believe that. I'm curious as to what are they being asked to do. Are they being put in favorable situations where they can do what they do best? We have Ward and Lenoir. All of a sudden, they can't cover? With the front and back taken care of, you can scheme around the weaknesses at linebacker and safety.
I honestly think we make this harder than what it is (example Bosa in coverage).

Neither Bosa or Floyd are going to overcome double teams all the time. Even without the double teams they aren't getting to the QB as much as they should. The O lines aren't even worried about a blitz so that makes their job easier.
