These players we rolling out on the field on defense aren't that good if you are being honest with ourselves.

The front 4 has been a total disappointment across the board. So far they all look like average guys. Not sure what happened to Bosa
Every linebacker and safety outside of FW has played below average. Campbell and Odum have been god awful.
Outside of Dmo every CB has played below average. And outside of Dmo and Ward the whole entire CB corp is unknown or just bad players.

No doubt scheme is an issue but we need to look at the FO and ask wtf happened to our d line? They haven't been acquiring good talent in the trenches and it's really starting to show. .

good points, I also think losing Armstead has more of an effect than we thought, just being a leader on the defense. Even though he didn't play as much, he set an example in his preparation and mindset.

He absolutely did. But let's look at some of yhe players. Odum is a special teams guy only. I guess they don't trust Mustapha enough. Campbell is just slow. As for our 4 man rush, idk what's going on. But I'd rather just get young guys in there who are still hungry to hunt the QB. Ward just had a bad game. I think we'll get better but until the young guys get up to speed, there won't be any huge difference. Bare minimum, we need to be better on 3rd down and disciplined with the penalties.

Agreed on everything. This is where they just have to try to scheme better and get off the field. Gotta be able to dial up some sort of pressures with Bosa and Floyd coming off the edge.

Neither Bosa or Floyd are going to overcome double teams all the time. Even without the double teams they aren't getting to the QB as much as they should. The O lines aren't even worried about a blitz so that makes their job easier.

And that should be an easy fix. Especially when we had Hargrave. Stunts, blitzes, etc. As a DC, I'd just assume double teams and quick passes would be how teams would attack me considering that's been a consistent formula for the last several seasons. We gotta stop making it easier on them.
Shanahan tought this guy was gonna be better than Wilks

I want to see if he can grow/learn from his mistakes. That's something Wilks never did.
Go back to the beginning of this thread and read the comments. Most were favorable about this hire. They liked the continuity and the prospect of adding some new wrinkles. Now it was a dumb hire. Once again we make decisions after the fact. I wish I could place bets that way.

Wilks would love to rush the QB or blitz and have the DB's play 10 yards off. It was maddening.

Facts. Also neither Demeco or Saleh started hot. I'll wait until week 8 before I judge.

Week 7 for me

this. perhaps it takes more than 3 games to become a good defensive coordinator in this league

We get a little impatient, don't we? Lol. But not super impressive so far.

A Hitner breakdown video..by the way..can he be our DC? Lol

"I would put that on Nick Sorensen."

Of course it does but that's why they probably shouldn't have hired a guy that needs on the job training with this roster.

If we don't fix things fast, Sorensen has to have playcalling stripped from him.

Check out our current rankings:

Total Defense: 16th
Passing YPA: 30th
Sacks: T-14th
Passer Rating Allowed: 25th
Third down conversion rate: 30th (A WHOPPING 53%)
Penalties: T-13th

This is inexcusable for having an all pro edge and linebacker, and pro bowl corner with another good corner and DE rushing on the other side.

I know Hufanga just came back, but that's another former all pro back there. Absolutely ridiculous to be ranked near LAST in passing YPA and third down defense.

That is frickin horrible!!! Thank Odom, Campbell, Brown, Yiadom and Sorensen for this mess. Offenses don't give this defense any respect no more, see Sam Darnold and his 99 yard touchdown pass. Sorensen outta be ashamed of himself, Lynch too for neglecting the Safety position.

Quite frankly I think it's coaching and scheme 100%

I have seen zero creativity this year. Have we heard even a single comment from a broadcast team about a nice disguised call? I haven't.

Inexcusable for these results with our talent.

We run one-sided overload fronts for goal line and short yardage. We put strong safeties on WR1s. I've even seen linebackers and DL matched up with receivers sometimes.

We went from one bad play caller to another. Wilks would play guys 10 yards off on 3rd and 2. He had the famous all out blitz with mere seconds left before the half.

We made a change, but Sorensen so far is even worse IMO. He makes idiotic play calls for even larger stretches of the game than Wilks did, TBH.

IMO, I think it's actually both.

After all, the defense mainly the Safeties have been out of position, missing tackles and quite frankly the secondary and LB's have been making dumb ass penalties. You're right though, Sorensen has been uncreative and has shown he's just as bad a play caller than Wilks. But getting back to the players, you can't argue they went cheap in free agency while hoping for big rewards, like they've known to do. That s**t isn't working this year, I would like to see them trade and add some real players. $50 mil in cap space can't all be for Purdy, do something with it dammit!!!!

Maybe they should have gone with Lord Fangio. The Eagles D looks much better. I'm tired of this revolving door at DC. Fangio would not get poached and we would finally have consistency.
That's absolutely what they should've done it was the obvious choice.

What was the organization looking or knew about the we didn't, otherwise fangio is the perfect choice over Sorenson as a new coordinator. I know he is a 3 4 guy but Bosa and Floyd could have been upright.

I'm confused why they did not at least look at it.
Fangio should've been hired over Wilks last year.

Sometimes I think this stuff is overthought. Plan should be simple....what match ups can I give Bosa, Floyd, Elliott, etc so they can get to the passer? I get this part is harder without Hargrave. How can we eliminate the run game? How can we force the QB to go away from preferred targets?

Agreed. I was initially optimistic.. But I've been extremely disappointed so far. Saleh only had a rough start because the team was absolutely terrible with no talent. Sorensen inherited multiple pro bowl and all pro guys. It shouldn't look this bad.

FWIW he's taken accountability for it and hopefully he can work through the problems he's having right now. Everyone has to do much better, and the worry for me right now is I'm not convinced that enough of our guys are coming in prepared.

Brown, Yiadom, Campbell, and our entire DL minus Bosa (and even he has had some uncharacteristically bad moments) have been absolutely owned out there in the past two games.
He did well today and made some good adjustments.

I loved the blitzing as a an excellent change up.
He'll be an acclaimed head coach in two years like the others the Nancies have weeped about.
