Pretty much. Other than Bosa our DEs suck too. Our defensive talent is just not that good.
We have Warner, Bosa, Ward, and Lenior. That's pretty much it.
Teams have done more with less.....
It is hard to say who is doing what "wrong"...outside of real obvious stuff like missed coverage or tackles.....the only thing we can point towards is the no one should want this result.
I think Bosa has screwed up plenty, but for all I know boss is doing exactly what he is suppose to be doing....but to my uneducated eyes...it looks like Bosa is failing to maintain the edge too often.
At the end of the day, they can't generate pressure on demand, they can't hold an edge, they can't stuff the middle, and they can't keep the offensive line off of the linebackers.
We know in years past...this defensive line wants to get pressure on passing downs, but also wants to control the passing windows to bait passes into passing lanes that have to go though linebackers in underneath coverage. Yet we seem to target DT that are bonified pass rushers and give up lateral real estate (random passing windows, escape lanes) in exchange for creating proximity to the QB.
In years past....On run downs, we seem to want a hat on a hat to hold the edge and let free LBers swarm to the run.
We are not getting any of that, if in fact that is still what the defense wants to accomplish.
most of our memorable drive stops this year seem to come from heroic one off plays by a solo defender, we just do not see 3 or 4 49ers converging on a pass or a run. In years past the mentality was always swarm to the ball..... heck remember 2 years ago....if a ball hit the ground...for ANY REASON....a defender picked the ball up... They treated any ball on the ground as a turnover and swarmed for a return. incomplete pass? Swarmed in for a fumble return...that is what the defense looked like.
The defense use to look highly organized, and in unison, today it looks like a bunch of people doing their own thing.
I dont know...but...I can't help but think we would be better off with less physically gifted defenders, if they were highly disciplined and had a high football IQ.
Anyways....two or three years ago, if you asked me to take a bet that it would be possible to have one of the worst defenses in the league with prime HOF defenders like Bosa and Warner, with solid CB, and a blank check book to sign highly touted pass rushers to fill the defense out.....then told me...the offense would also dominate the TOP to keep that defense rested....I would have taken your bet, and think you were off your rocker..... Goes to show how much I know...
