yeah I don't understand this signing

maybe if this had happened on day 3 or 4 of FA and we got him for 4 or 5m, but seems like an overpay for a projection

I know it's only been a day, but after Silver's report that we were going to overhaul the DL.... so far we've replaced Armstead, Young, Ferrell, Gregory, Kinlaw and Givens
with Floyd and Gross-Matos
I keep hoping they bring in another Justin Smith. Instead they keep bringing in another Samson Ebukam

hmm I see he was playing OLB on base downs here. Floyd played a lot in Staley's (Fangio's) scheme as a 3-4 OLB. Are these two signings to give the 49ers the flexibility of playing five man fronts (3-4)?

All they do is sign defensive line. Any thoughts on OFFENSIVE LINE Lynch?

OL class extremely deep and talented. We could find multiple long-term IOL and an OT of the future in this class. Seems like that's gonna be the plan now.

Good!

Teams that over spend in FA on OL usually get f**ked. If you can sign an all pro type of OL, sure, it makes sense. But when you give top money to average/above average OL, that's one way to put yourself in cap hell and not get impact players.

Hunt is by far the best G in this class (especially because of his age), but he's gonna be probably end up being the highest paid G during this offseason. Spending big money on Gs might be the worse way to spend to money if you want long them success.

Zeitler is another guy, I hope we at least make an attempt at him for 1-2 years, he's 34 but he's always been a very solid G

Then you got T Smith at T (really want us to get after him) but he's also going to be expensive, mid 30s now, and injury prone. But if he's willing to come for cheaper on a 2 year deal I would be all for it.

No thanks to mid 30s and injury prone.

Those two would be fine is the price is right. We have Colton and Burford as insurance policies if they go down. But an OL with TW and Smith at T, that would be fun if both are healthy especially during the playoffs.

That would most certainly stop us from having to telegraph the big runs behind Trent! I wonder how badly Tyron Smith wants to win a Super Bowl? Would be a lot to ask, not only coming here on a cheap deal, but also switching to RT. But man is a beast, would be fun to see!

He played RT in 2022, so it shouldn't be bad. One can only hope...

Yeah but that was coming off an injury season, and after the Cowboys had drafted his possible replacement. In FA hes going to have more options. It's just a question of ego, if he would be someone like Orlando Brown and insist on being a LT.

You might want to stop hoping they bring in a 3-4 DE to play 4-3...

Numbers are always overblown by agents

Justin Smith played DE in 4-3 in Cinci so he was both. But I was more alluding to the quality of player instead of position.

Fair enough, but he became an elite player as a 3-4 DE

Quality of player, yeah agreed but tough to get a blue chip line player in free agency without paying a lot.

He was elite in Cincinnati, just didn't get the recognition until he was on an elite defense.
Not sure how to feel about this one.. i guess we just need to trust they see something here.

Justin Smith spent nearly half his career playing as a DE in a 4-3. He was the prototypical 4-3 DE coming out in the draft.
The guy is huge. Hard to gage when all you can find are his highlights versus his full game. Definitely looks good versus the run and seems to have a good motor
Don't really like this signing. Unless the contract is very incentive-laden and $18M is the max value.
