It's not just throwing a bunch of guys on the DL, it's adding players who have experience in a W9.

They brought in two DTs that are coming from a wide9, to go with two OLBs that are coming from Fangio's scheme. I think Kyle may be cooking up some hybrid scheme.

I think it would be real telling if they re-signed Sebastian Joseph-Day, he played NT on Staley's defense.

Younger and surrounded by a rough cast for two of those seasons.

Yes! Durable/cheaper for almost the same production.

In case there was any uncertainty, Collins has primarily played 3tech. He and Hargrave will mostly likely rotate to keep one another fresh.

(from June 2023)

Collins has been quietly one of Houston's best defensive players. Much of what the past two coaching staffs have valued in the 6-foot-2, 310-pound lineman along the defensive interior has been shrouded by record-low output on the defense. As the Texans' primary 3-tech defensive tackle (who lines up on the outside shoulder of the guard), Collins recorded nine tackles for loss and 3½ sacks last season.

(Demeco) Ryans said after Tuesday's mandatory workout. "....Both guys are smaller tackles that can attack, utilize their quickness, their speed to really puncture the offensive line."

We haven't even finished free agency let alone the draft, and I already like this DL group much more than last year's group. I just want a real nose, and I'll be happy.

I'd like two nose tackles in case one goes down. However, there would be a log jam at DT so perhaps just one true nose tackle with Hargrave, Collins, Elliot, Givens, KDavis, nosetackle1. I'm thinking KDavis and Givens will be fighting for a roster spot up until the final preseason game and the team keeps 5 DTs.

He rushes the passer well. His tape says that and so do his ratings. What we aren't seeing is how he plays the run. His run defense ratings were slightly better than Kinlaw's (45 vs 35) but neither were very good.

He has a history of being available. Though Kinlaw played a lot this past season, there is still the stories about arthritic knees and recurrence of past problems. Hnece, Collins is a healthier version of Kinlaw.

I think some are under-rating Kinlaw and overrating Collins. My opinion. I hope Collins kills it but I see a situational player on passing downs.

They aren't the same player at all. Not the same size. Collins is by far more twitchy than Kin. Pad level is better. Technique is better.

you have to look at as what are they asked to do. Our scheme much like Ryans is one gap penetrating. It's not a 2 gapping scheme where your job is to plug holes and eat up blocks. It about beating your block and getting to the running back/QB. Stopping the run is just as much about our LBers as it is our DL.

so no I completely disagree he's a healthier Knlaw.

Sounds like folks want a 330lb fat NT that just takes up space. You don't have to spend up for that. That's a situational player. Being able to rush the passer from the interior is vastly more important.

I guess I didn't make my point well.

I was admitting that Collins was the better pass rusher though Kinlaw did get pressure. I was responding more to those who felt Collins would be the run-stopper we need. He may turn out to be that but his ratings do not show him to be that.
Like this pickup a lot. Major upgrade over our DT rotation last year. I still hope we can get another good DT to replace Armstead. Still a lot to happen in this off season.
Collins is the DT to replace Armstead. We probably add a piece in the draft, but I wouldn't hold your breath for a high dollar free agent DT signing.

If Malik is so good why did DeMeco let him go for chump change? Salary cap casualty?

They signed Autry and Fatukasi.

That's a pretty simplistic answer. So if Collins was so good, why did the Texans sign Autrey and Fatukasi?

Ok he's trash, is that better?

Well now I can see why you give simplistic answers...

It's not a high dollar guy they need. Just a cheap 2 down run stuffer

Or you could try doing some research instead of relying on other people to tell you what to think.
