Back in the day, I had an apparel sales agency and went to the Macy's store there frequently. By 2012 I closed the agency partly due to the decline in sales in SF. I have not been back in the city since then. It's sad because I used to look forward to each trip—no more.

You should plan another trip. It's great in 95% of the city and you're very unlikely to be a victim of any kind of crime. I've been going on average every other month for 1-3 nights for the last 6+ years. I've never seen a crime, human feces, or needles on the ground. I did see a crack rock change hands in the worst part of the Tenderloin about ten years ago though. Just kept walking and no one said anything to me.
