I seem to remember Shannahan saying (several years ago) the guard position was the least critical on the OL in his offense. … or maybe it was that a suitable guard was easier to find than a tackle or center.
Whatever the case, lack of a decent one on the right has been a real problem. I'm pretty excited about Puni and his awareness. Helps the C and T.

Guard is the easiest position in the game. You can plug and play guards easier that tackles. Center is one of the hardest because you need to call the protections and be in sync with the QB. Plus, centers have to snap the ball and are immediately rushed by the fattest, strongest DL.

It looks as though we did address the Oline in the draft after all…Mckivitz had 3 bad plays out of 70+ he will get paid if he keeps that level of play.

Jets have no outside pass rush. He's still 🗑.

There is a snap in there that several linemen are standing around not blocking anyone...and freaken Puni has two guys...one in each arm trying to protect Brock...lol
what a freaken stud
That is something that stands out with him, dude finds someone to block...lots of snaps he is helping other linemen, and the scheme appears to be leave Puni on an island more often then not.
It appears to me, as a completely uneducated guy that never played on either line...puni is a big picture kind of guy. I get the sense that other o line guys feel their job is to block xyz area, or xyz player...and that is what they do..block their assignment... Puni on the other hand, is a big picture guy....sure he has an assignment too...but he also has the overall goal of protecting his damn QB, and making sure your RB gets a clean running lane......and sometimes that means you have to go above and beyond.
Hat's off to this dude....what a draft pick. I am sure he is not the best guard to come out, or generational, or blue chip or whatever gets people talking about guards league wide....but to get drafted when he did, come in, and take ownership of the position....dude....what a stud.

This is way early, but does Puni move to RT at some point? He seems more consistent than McKivitz already and he seems to have the athleticism.
McKivitz is actually a better pass blocker than McGlinchy who went Round 1, Pick 9. So I wouldn't mess with that right now. What gives Brock problems is the inside pressures (example Chris Jones). So with Puni pass protection plus Brock's quick release (average 2.5 seconds) the OT's aren't as critical as a guy who can't read quickly, like Jimmy G, who was limited in accuracy to the middle of the field. If Zakelj - who is bigger than Brendel, and just as strong and quick - can beat out Brendel for the Starting Center position, I think we have the makings of a very dominant line. Again Assuming Trent and Banks stay💯% healthy.
This is how Drew Brees was protected in NO
Great guards and protection up the middle
FUNNY, I was just going to post the same thing.. Montana in this young days had two excellent technician OGs in Ayers and Cross.. if we can just somehow find a trading partner to land a RT..

Mckivitz is still just gelling with his new Buddy in Puni. As they play together more - both will improve during the season. Mckivitz didn't lose us the Superbowl with his performance.

He's serviceable, but probably gets replaced like mcglinchey did

I've seen enough. We win the Super Bowl last season with him playing.

Comes from a football family, these guys can usually play. AJ Epenesa's cousin. He's got it. Best 3rd rounder since Warner?
