In the past, it didn't make sense for the 49ers to use three safeties, which I interpret as using just 1 LB (Warner). There was no reason to remove Greenlaw to put in a third safety since Greenlaw > any third safety the 49ers had. But with Greenlaw unavailable for most of 2024, it could open the possibility of using three safety personnel.

I think lot is going to depend on how well they can utilize that set AND still defend against the run. Our run defense was just awful the first couple of playoff games.

Huf, Brown and Mustapha seem like they can handle themselves in the box. Who is the second LB again, Devondre Campbell? I have no idea how he plays. If the 49ers can shore up the DT position, that will play a larger role in improving run defense than the LB/S position.

I still have hopes for Hargrave. No question he was kind of a disappointment last year. I have no idea why he didn't perform up to the level we all were expecting. Coaching? Scheme? Who knows. He has to have a big bounce back year.
I know this isnt Hargrave thread, but Im still puzzled by people who said he was a disappointment.
Maybe your expectations were too high ?

He played exactly like he played last few years in Philly. His 7 sacks were above his career average. If people thought hes a 10 sacks every year type of player, I think the expectations were too high.

Definitely need another run stuffing DT, the way the Lions and Chiefs trampled them
Maybe DJ Jones?
Solid prospect. Attacks down hill and reads the play and hits the angles and tackles properly. Improves his tackle numbers every season. Can he stay home and cover consistently is the key.

I think his avenue at first is ST as a gunner but could end up being a good player. Always around the ball.

I agree 100%, I didn't view 2023 as a disappointment for Hargrave, he had a solid season, and yeah he's not a 10 sack a yr guy, if anyone was a disappointment it was Bosa, but that was mainly due to his holdout IMO.

Anyway back to Hargrave, I didn't think he was bad at all, he & Bosa were the only good DL we had last year, since AA was hurt a lot, & the rest didn't do much, we really showed the loss of Omenihu was huge, I have much more faith in the current DL group, the IDL group being Maliek Collins, who IMO is a better player right now than Armstead is, Hargrave is back, I like the Elliott signing, also bringing back Givens over a Kinlaw was the right move, we also have Kalia Davis, who I have high hopes for, and then the UDFA Evan Anderson is intriguing, he's down to 326 according to 49ers.com, so he could very well be a contributor this season, if he makes the team.

Only question DL wise is, how many do we keep, 10 or 11? My current locks for the DL group in 2024 are Nick Bosa, Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos, Maliek Collins, Javon Hargrave, Kevin Givens, & Jordan Elliott, with right now Drake Jackson & Robert Beal Jr. being the last 2 EDGE guys, unless someone better comes available, as for IDL, I'd have Kalia Davis and/or Evan Anderson as the 10th and/or 11th DL, would be nice to have a young NT like Anderson signed for 3yrs, and Davis also on a rookie deal, and shouldn't be a UFA until after 2026 since he missed all of his rookie year.
Can Malik be our Jimmie Ward replacement? A guy who can play all over the field, hits hard, plays with intensity, good tackler. But hopefully minus the bad penalties.
malik already impressing the coaching staff. Good sign

Malik is our Hufanga insurance/replacement.
Malik will do something out of this world this year.
On paper my favorite 2024 draft pick. Will grade him after three seasons.
This guy could be an ALL PRO

I'm excited about Malik but you don't make all pro based on how built you are.

We gotta stop overreacting to players too early or with camp/preseason performance.

Let the man play in some real games and let's see what he can do. Hopefully he will be an all pro but nothing says that currently.
