Shanahan always talks about competition, and brings in vets to use as stopgaps where there are holes.

OL - 8 or 9, who fills the back up spots? Bartch, Burford, Hubbard, Kingston, Moore or Parker?
TE- Latu, Pline, Saubert, Willis?
DL - Kalia or Anderson?
CB- Lucas, Luter, Thomas, Womack, Ya-Sin?
RB-Guerendo, Mason, Mitchell, Schrader?

Bell has the upside, special teams, and the best contract in his favor IMO

I think he's the frontrunner for the 6 spot, with Gray being a darkhorse

Conley and Taylor could stick to the practice squad without risk of being poached

Bell's continued muffed punts will be a real chance for someone like T Taylor to get the ST gig and Gray for WR6.

Injuries are changing this landscape by the day.

Trying to figure out my current week 1 53, pre Titans preseason game, I'm stuck, I have 54 players, including Aiyuk, but also Brandon Allen, but I have a feeling we just cut him & keep him on the PS, so my 53 looks like this as of now.

If the 49ers don't strike a deal with Aiyuk, or trade him, I'd have either Conley or Bell making the final 53, I'm not sure what they'll do with Hufanga, if he doesn't get activated off active/PUP, then I'm assuming he goes on reserve/PUP to begin 2024 with Dre.

With this roster, the 49ers would have $21,124,867 in salary cap room to begin 2024, note that right now the 49ers have about $30.8M in cap room, but the remaining $9.7M or so difference between my cap number & the current cap room comes down to the final 2 roster spots counting at least $795K each, so $1.59M total, plus the practice squad would cost $4,550,400, then you have 5 injured players, so you need to add another $795K times 3, so $2.385M, that's a total of $8,525,400 in extra cap room taken up, plus the 2 IR players, who don't count now, they add up to $993,333, so $9,518,733, which is how you end up with around $21.1M in cap room.

Saw your article and love the work as always. Only thing I'd want is Conley over Latu, but I can see given that we are run first 4 TEs make more sense than 6 receivers- especially when the 6th won't even be active.

This team, particularly if/when Williams and Aiyuk return and Hufanga and Greenlaw are healthy looks better on paper than the last two years. Pass rush and DB room is much stronger.

Chris Conley won't make the team and the only reason why it would be because of his veteran salary. I think he's a solid back up and would love to see him make the team or Ronnie bell. Also I don't think Robert Beal makes the team, he didn't play well last night.

I don't see Latu making the cut and Shanahan likes his vets so Conley wins out. I would not be surprised to see the depth chart in this order for these positions:
WR (6)

  • Deebo Samuel/Brandon Aiyuk
  • Jauan Jennings
  • Chris Conley
  • Ricky Pearsall
  • Trent Taylor (Punt Returner)
TE (4)

  • George Kittle
  • Eric Saubert
  • Brayden Willis
  • Jake Tonges

Thanks man, I can see Conley on the 53 over Latu, but not sure they actually cut him, being as he was a 3rd rd pick.

I agree the team looks much better once Dre & Huf come back, better than, as you said, the last few yrs, yes the pass rush & DBs look much stronger.

I have him on the PS since he won't go thru waivers, & yes is veteran salary would become fully GTD if on the roster week 1, as for Beal, I don't know who else they have on the EDGE then without Beal behind Bosa, Floyd, & Gross-Matos.

No way they cut Cowing IMO, also can't see them keeping Tonges over Latu.

The possibly elevate him after week 1 so it's not guaranteed

I forgot the fully guaranteed deal, but I figure Conley will be in our plans at some point this year. I'd rather Jennings verses the 3rd CB than at the X. Too bad Gray is too 👎.

Thx ab!!!
It's close to the end for Drake, Ambry, Danny Gray and even Latu.
Drake will be on IR and will get a chance in 2025. Shanahan is quick to cut early round picks who don't work out, like Pettis, Sermon and Davis-Price, so this could very well be the end for both Gray and Latu.

Anyone know how Mason Pline did, Pline vs latu who you got?

Hard to say but something to watch in the next preseason game. Pline only got special teams snaps: https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/182659-worst-graded-players-titans-counts/
