He can block also.

Look at the Superbowl this year.

We never got George Kittle as an active participant of our offence from a receiving perspective. George was always in as a blocker. It cost us the game......

amongst other things.

Most of his snaps were routes, he barely blocked when we passed in the SB

Pretty much. The narrative that he's a pass blocker all the time is not true. If it's a running play that's different.

Yes, he blocked on run plays but where was he as an option in the passing game?

This is one of the most stunning aspects of the Superbowl, that Kyle didn't get the ball in the hands of George Kittle more often.

I mean George is an All Pro game breaker.

Kyle needed to dial up some plays to George Kittle in the Superbowl. Find a way!!!

And it never happened, for whatever reason.

Have you watched film from the superbowl ? It wasnt a good game from Kittle. The fourth down conversion on an out was nice, but hes had a forgettable day. They had a play dialed up for him and he and Brock werent on the same page. He has lined up on the LoS a couple of times and got bullied by a DB and fell down.

In fact, Deebo and Kittle - the physical players on our team - got out-physicaled at the line when they couldnt get a free release. And even BA got bullied.
There are no excuses for the disappointing game that George Kittle played in the Superbowl.

He was poor at best.

Pretty sure Kyle had him lined up in the backfield and he missed a block on one of our biggest oof plays

Exactly.

Except for the catch against Dallas in 2022, Kittle has been disappointing in playoffs.

About picking Latu in the 3rd round
Always loved the guy. He was a stud at VT then got drafted as a QB, flamed out and remade himself into an above average TE. IIRC he just makes clutch plays and if a backup can get to that 30-40 catch range behind Kittle that means this offense gets to line up heavy but play light.

Man our backup TE's behind Kittle must be really bad

Way it's looking so far, using a 3rd round pick on Latu == big oof.

Way it's looking so far, nearly 12 or so wasted picks on third rounders since 2017. Only ones who's worked out has been Warner. Lol

I don't think this signing is a statement that Latu is a bust. Thomas will probably get a one year deal. It gives time for the young tight ends to learn and integrate.
It's too soon to call Latu a bust. He still has time to develop. Not all third rounders are starters out of the gate.

Kittle has been injured in the playoffs, he just got done with surgery a week ago.

He is an "ok" blocker but maybe the coaches can improve him in that area. Pass catching is his forte.

Instead of going into the 2024 season with a couple of massive question marks behind Kittle on the depth chart the 49ers will instead have a proven veteran with bonafide pass-catching chops. Not only will that give them insurance behind Kittle, but it also opens up a slew of new doors for how the 49ers can operate with more than one TE.

Maybe if Logan Thomas plays 20-25% of snaps, George Kittle will be less chance to get injured.

And maybe one day George Kittle will have a reasonable play off game.

From what I've read, very average at best. He will be expected to block well here though. He's got the size, just not the mentality.

On the zone-blocking plays that are the foundation of the 49er running game, Thomas had the eighth highest Pro Football Focus run block grade among all tight ends.
If Coach runs 2-TE sets I'm thinking it'll be Kittle & Saubert. Happy to have Thomas...he's a legit receiving threat. I'd like to see the rookie Pline make the team...don't see Latu making the roster.
