He was the worst rated player according to pff. I didn't watch the game tho

I did not see that put I was doing chores during the game......

Even if he was actually the worst defender, he still flashed excellence.....it might only being a matter of getting him to the point he can just play off his instincts....so yeah he might have been mistake prone, but reps could get him to a point that he is excellent....you can't teach what he has...you can clean up mistakes with some players.

I feel bad for any injuries but Ambry Witherspoon Thomas is a liability so Ya Sin or Womack should be our #6 cb anyway.

I like Thomas but Ya-Sin is solid(as a rock)

He had one play where he knifed into the backfield nicely.

Outside of that though.. Goodness gracious he was awful. He had a multitude of terrible angles, didn't shed blocks well, and got burned in coverage.

Terrible take.

It really isn't...I said as much live.

Him and Graham were lost in no man's land a lot. Graham could at least shed some blocks but man... Winters cost a lot of big runs.

Winters best asset - and it was obvious on college film - is his speed. It also makes him look good in practice when there is no live tackling.

But when pads come on and live tackling starts his issues that made him tumble to late rounds kinda show - missed tackles, iffy angles, bad pursuit, and iffy coverage.

I still believe in this staff developing lbs, and Greenlaw himself did not look good first preseason of his career... but if we were to start Winters at WLB today I'd be a bit more worried after seeing this game. Since Fred spends so much time in coverage you need a surefire tackle and a thumper and a cleanup guy at WLB, which Greenlaw is. And so far, Winters isn't.

He was even more lost in coverage. That was even more concerning.

LB play was bad in general.

Agreed. I re-watched the game and was definitely not impressed..

I think we'll need to bring in a veteran. I get that we aren't game planning, but no amount of game planning is gonna suddenly make you better at getting off blocks or take better angles in the open field. That's fundamentals and technique.

It's just one game, but not a good start.
I didn't watch any of the game. I don't waste much time watching pre season anymore. Between starters not playing and no game plans it's become a joke. Individual players can shine or struggle but even then you have to see who they were playing against. Certainly nothing to get worked up about if some player has a bad game. Pre season games have always been rather meaningless but now they're a joke.

Right. Just give me no injuries and we are good to go.

I was actually going to watch some of it but I forgot to record it last night on the NFL network. They don't show 49er pre season games live in Eugene very often. They keep trying to shove Seahawk and Charger games down our throat. Ever since Herbert was drafted by SD they show all the Charger games. If he orders a pizza they tell us what he had on it.

exactly. curtis robinson was solid and reliable but not flashy. same with DFF when he plays (not this game obv)

if anyones interested heres review of some of all 22 film. I dont endorse the creator (although I think hes just fine especially compared to some other creators out there)

38:30 mark. This is something that is deeply concerning. this isnt some exotic coverage. its a simple rb checkdown route that is ran in all type of football, from high school to college. This is the kind of play if you do several times you get benched for in the NFL.

40:36 mark. same thing except now its in pursuit. even more concerning. the guy has a ball in his hand and hes not cutting or anything.

42:25 slow to diagnose and fill the gap and gets taken out of the play completely

That was the theme on saturday. Its not like Titans made amazing plays in the pass game. Its not like someone got beat outside. Everything was just dump into soft zone or to rb in the middle of the field or just solid blocking and let the Niners dbs and lbs hang themselves. And hang themselves they did.

Odds are that was a simplistic defensive plan.....so it might even be worse than it seems....

Having said that.... like you say....dude needs time to develop...he is not there yet...but there is reason for hope

Either way......Can't teach what Whinters has

If the 49ers can get him to make smart reads quickly, they have a dude who can impact a game.

Ji'ayir Brown needs to do better vs the run. He had the RB one on one and he whiffed the tackle and gave up the TD.
