Lol. I def thought there was something to 'smoked' too. The pros and cons of being overly analytical.

KeepRabbitsOut, did you know already about Okoye and the discus?

Yes. I follow all the international players and their backgrounds. But still had to look it up to confirm.

*Nevermind, lol*

I didn't mean to.
I can't even tell you the things I initially tried to rhyme with "Stokes."

That, is cool. I like that.
Now you're gonna have me looking into backgrounds of international players.
I met quite a few during my reporting days.

Blokes would have definitely given it away, lol

Many times, I go look up player names that were guessed. I found this on Wersching (from Wikipedia):

In 1977, Wersching joined the San Francisco 49ers. In Super Bowl XVI, Wersching tied a Super Bowl record by kicking four field goals, and his field position kick-offs also helped his team win, 26–21. He won another Super Bowl ring with the 49ers in Super Bowl XIX, defeating the Miami Dolphins 38–16. When he retired, Wersching held 49ers records for points, field goals and extra points. He was the 12th player in NFL history to score 1,000 points in a career, and is the most recent player to have scored from a fair catch kick.[1]

So, how in the world do you score from a fair catch kick?
Anybody? Anybody?

So many of these players, whether famous or not, have very interesting stories about them.

I almost used "bloke," Smokey. I wanted people to catch the British angle.
I didn't because I finally decided it would be too much of a giveaway.

You can take a free kick from a fair catch spot. John Madden used to reference it here and there during his broadcasts.

I've never seen it as far as i can remember watching (started after RW's days).

What right handed 49er QB threw passes to Rice, Owens, and Stokes.

maybe Garcia and Stenstrom. but why would they not dare to receive his passes?
My first quick thought was Garcia because wasnt it TO that complained once that one of his passes fell from the sky like a punt or was that from a completely different set of players

As best as I remember it.... there use to be a rule...that allowed a FG after the game was over ...if..... The game would have ended on a punt return.... Like very low clock... seconds or zeros

The huge difference is this FG can be a "drop kick" ...ie...like a punter.

So you can punt the ball between the up rights.

I suppose punts can simply kick further then actual FGs when the punter/kicker has zero reason to worry about hang time.

I could be wrong on some of that, or all of that...but that is what I remember

I thought that dog was on that Florida QB...ken Dorsey? Or maybe even Tim Rattay

An actual drop kick is where the ball touches the ground first… generally kicked simultaneously (as soon as it touches the ground). It's not a punt where they kick it before the ball touches the ground.

You can kick field goals this way in the NFL still, just nobody does it. Doug Flutie did it once.
