I honestly thought St Clair fit better because his number is retired and no one can wear it anymore. Whereas, someone with 'au' in the name can potentially be drafted again.

This was pretty fun. I think you should continue with this. In the process people will learn some new 49er names, which is always good.

Glad you like it. And THANKS to all who took time with this.
I will continue. More than likely, on or just before Oct. 24th.

And while I am at it, I love how this board lets Threads continue on and on, for years. It think that concept is so cool.
So when I post Question No. 2, I will put it here in this same thread.
Needless to say, I love this Name That Niner!. All the thought processes. Putting it out there for people to try and figure out.
And Hey, Good luck against Arizona!

It was fun,

Regardless of St Clair, who was the perfect riddle..

With the 79, and him being named after the patron saint of goldsmiths...

Perfect answer
That goes way back

You are not a 49er fan?
Name that Niner who played for four seasons and was a patriarch of a family who had sons and grandsons that also played in the NFL, one of which, entered an NFL team's HOF this year.

This was my thought too lol.
I gotta give this dude credit, this thread looked like a spam thread and he has somehow managed to get all these replies and run it up to page 6.

Most others get relentlessly hammered by most posters here and eventually slaughtered by the mods

Bravo to this guy

The answer to this clever riddle is Joe Montana!
  • "Of noble properties, of prospects" refers to someone of importance or greatness, which Joe Montana certainly was as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
  • "In days present, in days of old" refers to his lasting legacy both during his playing days and in modern times.
  • "He's the only 49er, ever, whose last name's forged from gold" alludes to "Montana," which is also the name of a state known as the "Treasure State" because of its history with gold mining.
Joe Montana's name being associated with "gold" ties it all together perfectly!

DOPEMAN. I truly appreciate all of that thought and effort you put into this. Joe Montana is not the answer.
Almost all of the questions were formulated from obscure 49er names.
Somebody out there will get this in an instant. Yes it is tricky. But for some minds, it isn't.

I totally missed out on this. I highly doubt I would've guessed the answer but would have been frustratingly fun trying.

Maybe for next question give a little notice beforehand.

I will keep that in mind, krizay.
I am in a different time zone, so it may be difficult to post it at a time that is most convenient for people logging on during prime time hours on the west coast.
What about this one.. what about this one ?

" Bring your own pencils if you want to be great !! " - name that Niner !!!!
