Here's the biggest issue for me: The NFL's recent embrace of gambling has really opened the door for fans to believe—rightfully or not—that the games can be bought and manipulated by the league, the refs, and Vegas. The NFL has to recognize that issue, and it should be doing everything in its power to combat it. Situations like the one we saw last night will only raise more suspicions. It's a terrible look.

The thing is if the NFL was ever found to be fixing or manipulating outcomes it could kill a multi billion dollar industry. They wouldn't risk the scandal.

I'm not saying the NFL is fixing or manipulating anything. Rather, fans now have greater reason to think that it's possible in light of the prominence of sports gambling. The NFL needs to fight that perception by getting things correct on the field. Last night's incident did them no favors.

Okay. I misunderstood what you were saying. Fans love conspiracies. We see it every day on this sight with people saying the refs never call penalties on the Chiefs (they were 6th in the league last year).

WRONG, They never call penalties in the Super Bowl on the Chiefs. But as of late they don't call the obvious penalties the Chiefs do. f**k the NFL and the Chiefs!!!

Aaaaand you just proved our point

How did Kyle know so quickly that the ball touched the Seattle player? Was he just taking a chance with incomplete information?

Brian on the spot.

49ers VP of Football Administration Brian Hampton informed Shanahan that the ball had likely touched Williams, prompting Shanahan to challenge the call.

I was wondering who "Hamp" was!

It's so sad to see just how poor the officiating has become these days. Thankfully we won the game anyway.

I wouldn't call that poor officiating. The review process is what was flawed not the guys on the field. At least they admit that they blew it so maybe they will take measures to improve the process.

As a long time football fan I have to say that I don't think instant replay has helped the game. Yes it corrects some missed calls but it's also slowed the game down. Looking to see if the ball is moving as a receiver crosses the sideline is BS. When the officials made the calls and that was it the game moved quicker and was more enjoyable to watch. Even with the replays fans still argue if they got it right.

Deebo also got mugged In the end zone.. It was pretty bad Tbh.

It would have won us the 1 seed

It can be argued that Seattle would've played with more urgency against AZ at the end of that year with the 1 seed on the line, but I agree with you.

To be fair, they let both teams' DBs be aggressive.
LIKE I said, all the NFL needs to do is for the team asking for the INSTANT REPLAY to submit their angle to the ref and have him look at that... how can the NFL un able to apply ALL ANGLES right away?

I would personally propose to have each time submit their VIEW of the replay once they throw in the flag.. that's also one way to justify if the team's replay team is worth keeping.. You don't see a clear angle, then advise the HC to NOT throw in the red flag..

sheeezzz..

That would take even longer. Minutes for the team to submit their preferred angle. They may not even have all of those depending on the broadcast they have. Then minutes more for the refs and replay people to figure it out and make a ruling. Talk about slowing down the game in a real boring way.

They definitely allow more contact than they used to. It's odd since thye have a rule now that you can't contact the receiver when the ball is in the air. Except they do every game. It seems they've decided that as long as both players are hand fighting then it's okay. I see plays in a lot of games where there's virtually no way the receiver can catch the pass because the defender is all over him and there's no call. Unless they grab and hold it's not called as much as it used to be.

Too many people are risk adverse for a huge organized thing,

but

if we are being honest.... George Carlin already explained to us...decades ago....how this stuff works.

Having worked as middle management in Corporate America for 20 plus years, the dude was 100% right....

When all these dudes, and ladies....go to the same schools, are in the same clubs, hang out in the same social circles, have similar enough goals.....you don't need a charter and weekly meetings to push things in a certain direction...

One of the crazier things I've seen. It was obvious on multiple angles that the ball went off the returner's fingers and the NFL excuse that they just didn't have the proper angle was absolute BS. If you can't count on them to make the right call even when they have instant replay, even when they have NY checking in and aiding in the review, I don't know where you go from here?

Man, I went off on the NFL & Goodell on X/Twitter, I didn't hold back, it was pure BS, obvious it went off the returner right thumb, yet the BS excuse of not having the high res videos/images was BS, so sick of this, the NFL under Goodell keeps getting worse and worse IMO.

Yea, however, the number of penalties called against a team has less of an effect on a game vs when/and what penalty is called during the course of a game.

The 49er got called for catch interference, but then the refs huddled and determined he got pushed into the returner from behind so they changed the call on the field. Because the call on the field got changed it opened up a new outcome none of them realized at the time which was the ball hit the Seattle players finger. Giving the 49ers the ball after review basically hands them the game there and it would have been due to a reversal of a reversal of a call on the field and the NFL couldn't allow that. They kept the call on the field even though any moron can see it hit the Seattle player. All to keep the game from being over so we keep watching. What a f**king joke, really hard to see this as anything other than game fixing."

It remind me of Madden Football. When you are dominating another team then all off a sudden something incorrect happens to help the losing team (penalty, missed call, an interception that touched the ground not corrected).

Last nights game was pure relief instead of joy. The second half after they went up 20 was so annoying.
