That's not a cheap shot. The QB was running at the edge of the field trying to get more yards. He should get hit for that.

This and tbh, Mahomes wasn't even trying to go out of bounds body language wise compared to that video... he was trying to trick the defender.

Coaches need to tell their defenders to light him up when he runs along the sidelines like that. Once he gets his bell rung he will think twice. Instead he feels entitled.

Honestly, this should be pulled out into its own thread.

There are two factors at play: 1) player safety, especially the QBs and 2) fairness of the game. The current NFL policy or "practice" as far as I can tell is that the NFL has told officials to side on protecting the QB in these situations but it has gotten to the point where deception is the norm and fairness for the defense is out the door.

The league needs to consider stricter guidelines cause although the "out of bounds" run deception isn't happening on every play or game it has gotten to the point where it is pretty prevalent especially for high profile mobile QBs.

the QB's foot had already been out of bounds as the defender was bracing for the hit. So QB's toe out of bounds, defender was less then 2 yards away....

That above play...should not have been a flag (no idea if it was or was not...), the defender was bracing for contact on the QB moving up the field.

Any easy fix to this is, is return a portion of the responsibility of protection to the ball carrier, or QB. Contact is inevitable...it's football....if an offensive player want's the safety that a rule can provide, they should be required to "give up" in a timely manner before contact.

No last second foul bating slides, no last second darts out of bounds to try and bait a flag.

The rule should read something to the effect of timely and obvious surrender on the play.

When you factor in arm length, most defenders are often making contact 1 to 2 yards beyond their center of gravity...you can't expect them cease momentum in a split second. So they obviously have to stay in no mans land of do I, or don't I when it comes to this bang-bang sideline plays/qb slides... and that is being exploited.

If it was up to me, the rule would be clear....obvious surrender on the play...and put ownership of that players safety in that players hands, versus trying to make defenders mind readers.
