I don't.

I do think he's a useful guy to have on staff. As an assistant he was impressive enough for Vic Fangio to take with him from Chicago to Denver and for Sean McVay to hire him as DC. I think he's one of those guys that isn't real strong when it comes to leadership ability but is probably very helpful when it comes to gameplanning and coaching up players.

Jim O'Neil of all people, this freaking guy

has gotten consistent work across the NFL and is currently on Dan Campbell's staff in Detroit.

Shanny hates Jim. Worked together in 2014 with Cleveland and purposely chose to not retain him back in 2017.

We need a more aggressive approach on defense. More blitzing, please.

Blitzing is not what people think. It only works against crappy QB who panic. Any decent QB loves blitzes because it means guys will be open. Teams who blitz a lot are using it as defensive deodorant. They aren't confident in staying back and stopping an offense normally. The key is to get pressure with 4 and keep everyone else back in coverage.

  • Dave Merritt: A long-time assistant to Spagnuolo, Merritt is the current defensive backs coach for the Chiefs. The two worked together during the Giants' championship season in 2007.

we don't need anymore first time DC risks. Shanny probably will pick a vet. Like Gus Bradley.

I understand, just saying that sometimes coaches might suck at one position or another but still can have their uses. I wouldn't be upset about Staley sticking around in his current spot on the staff.

Me personally would not be happy with Gus Bradley.

It's plausible that Staley could get a DC role given all of the current and anticipated vacancies out there.

And if he does leave, I'd love Ulbrich to replace him on our staff.
Compare the hiring of Nick Sorensen vs the hiring of Vic Fangio. Enough said. Shanahan needs to make a significant hire on defense or he will be fired within the next 2 years. Shanahan does not execute a high powered offense that can offset defensive issues. We went to the Superbowl twice because of our defensive talent. This is the most important hire of Shanahan's tenure.
I think I'm in the Dennis Allen camp for DC. When he was just DC his team's were in the top 10 or just outside top 10. Their rankings took a hit when he became head coach.

For special teams give me Phil Galiano. The saints asst. under Darren Rizzi.

Phil Galiano enters his sixth season with the New Orleans Saints as assistant special teams coach. Galiano is a veteran in the coaching ranks with 24 years of experience, including eight seasons in the NFL.

Galiano's work with Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi has made the kicking game an integral part of New Orleans' success. On coverage units, J.T. Gray's 65 tackles rank second in the NFL. The punting game has produced the top three seasons in club history for punts inside-the-20-yard line. Since 2019, the Saints have excelled in the return game. Over the five-season period, the team has been ranked sixth in the NFL in punt return average (10.1), while the coverage units have allowed the third-lowest punt return average (7.0). The special teams units have not given up a touchdown since 2019.

Last season, the Saints boasted one of the NFL's top special teams units, with the unit finishing second in NFL Writer Rick Gosselin's annual rankings. New Orleans finished in the Top 10 in the NFL in 13-of-22 categories, either leading or sharing the lead in five of them and finishing second in two others. New Orleans finished first in the league in opponent punt return average (5.6), while giving their defense the second-best starting point after kickoffs (24.2).

Blitzing also stresses the offensive line's ability to pick it up which creates pressure on the QB that the QB wasn't expecting because it should've been picked up.

Our offensive line gave up a ton of pressure this season on blitzes that they failed to pick up.

That's why you want to blitz more is to keep the offensive line guessing play to play what they'll see and to increase your odds of causing a breakdown. Straight rushing 4 puts you at a numbers disadvantage and presnap the offensive line knows exactly who has who once the ball is snapped. It's much easier when the ball is snapped to setup and take on Bosa if he basically never has to worry if someone else is going to rush inside that he needs to pick up and let Bosa be the hot.
