No but it's weird how people act like he's Jim O'Neil or Greg Manusky. You know how many DC's in NFL history have called a defense that was #1 in points and yards? And the year before they weren't Top 10 in either category, nor the season after.

Who have 49ers interviewed for DC? Besides Saleh and Staley? Yes, Deshea Townsend. But I believe that was to satisfy the Rooney rule. other than that it is Saleh and Staley from what I know. They have interviewed a boat load more guys for ST and OC than they have DC. Something is up.

I haven't read this article until just now but this goes along with I am saying.

That was before. He has the cooties now. I've never seen a team quit on a HC the way the chargers did on him.

Spagnuolo with the Rams, who then went on to suck as DC with New Orleans and struggling back in New York before finding his way to KC.

Staley's background is in Fangio's scheme with primarily odd fronts so I don't expect him to stick around with the 49ers but he'll be a DC somewhere again and will probably do decently.
Based on everything that is going on, I believe Robert Saleh and the 49ers have a verbal agreement on him to come back as DC if he does not land a HC job. If he does land a head coaching gig, the 49ers most likely will hand the DC reigns to Staley. Why? They have not set up interviews any other candidates out there. For example, Dennis Allen, Ulbrich, Lou Anarumo, etc. At least there is no urgency to.

The problem with Staley is that he only had 1 year of DC experience on a roster that had Ramsey and Donald, along with career years with Floyd, Reeder, and others. Not discrediting Staley as part of that outcome , but what's the attribution of scheme/coaching vs. innate talent during that year?

And then you look at his track record as HC, and his defenses were horrible against the run, OK in the pass, but overall were just not strong units for a team that had Bosa, Mack, James, Samuel, and other large investments.

Lastly, we aren't seeing his name in the news interviewing for DC roles. Maybe that'll change over time, but I don't expect Staley back if Saleh or Allen gets hired for the gig.
I asked Jennifer Lee Chan if about the possibility of unreported interviews for DC, and her answer was that the Niners might be waiting on a candidate or candidates who are currently in the playoffs. Besides Dave Merrit, whom we interviewed last year, I'm not sure who else that could be…

This could be as well. Sean Desai of the Rams?

So this is what if found: In-person interviews with assistants who are under contract with other teams can begin on Jan. 20, unless those teams are still alive for the conference title games. Those coaches must wait until Jan. 27, when either they were eliminated from the playoffs or have a bye week before the Super Bowl. Coaches on playoff teams who played on wild-card round cannot interview for jobs at all until three days after their wild-card game. And they'll have a short window to get those initial interviews

Rooney Rule would have been already satisfied interviewing Saleh
It is a head scratcher to me that we do not interview more candidates for the single most important position on our coaching staff.
Get insights from other people, collect opinions from outside at least to have.an unbiased view on your roster and scheme....

This all gives me a bad taste about stubborness and only thinking within fixed borders that follows us since years.

Candidates:

1) Saleh (First choice for Shanahan)
2) One or more mystery candidates in the playoffs (if Saleh get HC job)
3) Staley (Fall back plan for Shanahan if no one above)

I'm more in favor of bringing in Dennis Allen as DC.

If Saleh is uncertain then I'd be happy with Allen. Creative in how he deploys his fronts, not too passive or too blitz happy, he could be a long term fixture as a DC.

My favorite package would be Allen+Rizzi coming over and holding down DC and special teams for years. Good way for Kyle to simplify his life and not have to go through this almost yearly.

I like it!

Allen can become our Spags.

hopefully the FO sets up an interview with John Fassel soon

That's another good ST candidate

I really, really don't like Staley. I'm sorry I'm sure he's smart but he's been living off that 2020 COVID season. Everything the guy has touched since has turned to ****. Ever since the media worshipped him as a super genius for saying "you need a good running game to balance your passing game!" in a press conference, I've had an irrational disdain for the guy.

Honestly I just want him gone altogether. I don't care about that 2020 season.
