Why would he need to do that if Prime is the target?

And this is the DC/STC thread; you do know he's being interviewed for the HC position right?

Is there a HC who got fired mid season (as a first time HC) with a .350 winning % and no playoff appearances that got hired to be the HC that same off season?

the chance he's becomes a HC this cycle is like 10% if that imo.

I'm just trying to sort the mythology out.

As head coach of the Chargers he lost a playoff game after going up 27-0.
Then the following season he let the raiders drop 63 points on him and got fired.
That's some headline D fails. But apparently Renaldo Hill was the Chargers actual DC for that- where's he at these days….

Conversely, as DC of the Rams in 2020, his team ranked #1, with some HOF caliber talent, of course but still.

The takeaway is don't hire Staley as a head coach.
But as DC he has exhibited some competency.

I'm willing to be challenged on this if someone can bring in facts.

I think the only question i would have was where was he when the defense was struggling? As assistant head-coach i would think he'd be able to have some input on the defense. Maybe he did or maybe he didn't. I dunno but i don't think most fans DO NOT want a promotion from within considering the struggles we had.

I wouldnt be mad i'd just think of it as.. meh

I think the easy thing to challenge is he was a DC for one yr. It's hard to gauge if that can be a consistent thing. Toss in what the heck happened this yr? I'm willing to bet he had a sizable say on defense

The negatives:

1) He inherited a Wade Phillips defense, with most likely the same assistant coaches
2) His "defense" never translated over to the Charger
3) What exactly has he done this past year on the 49ers staff

The positives:

1) The Rams defense did excellent that one year he was DC
2) He has worked under Vic Fangio

My main concern are negative points 2) and 3)

Agreed and while it's not always the case (spags). When a good coordinator becomes a HC the side of the ball they came from usually does pretty well. Saleh's D in NJ was legit. Kyle's offense has been good. Mcvay good offense. Vic good D etc etc.

Staley has multiple seasons as the HC in LA along with some damn good talent to not make it work imo.
Thank you all for the appraisals ^^^^
Trying to gauge how Shanny feels this would be a positive enough promotion given how the 49ers D performed this past season.

You keep bringing this up but why did Wade never have a Top 10 defense with mostly the same personnel?

The defense under Staley performed way better than it did under Wade or Raheem Morris.

I think Staley is probably a very bright coach that is great with X's and O's but isn't a strong leader that can command a whole locker room and handle all the myriad of responsibilities that a HC has to take care of.

I don't think it'll be with the 49ers but I have zero trouble seeing him ending up as a defensive coordinator somewhere in the NFL next season.

What's crazy about the Internet, and definitely this forum, is that people act like they have all the information at all times. And are EAGERLY interested in posting takes as if they have the full picture.

Like if something wasn't tweeted out it didn't happen. Or, in this case, thinking that the Niners (who are in texting relationships with literally every agent and GM in the league) aren't fully aware of the direction other teams are going for their HC hires.
