If you did want to get a past QB from a draft Zach Wilson is better. Stronger arm and more athletic. I thought he had good upside coming out. His timing and anticipation seems horribly off. At least with his original team. But there is no denying the athletic traits. They are greater than Jones for sure.

his timing and anticipation are off but somehow he's a better QB because of his stronger arm & athletic traits, then you must think Trey Lance is also a better QB right?

Lance is not even that athletic. But if I did want to bring in a guy with upside potential it's more Zach Wilson. Mac Jones is a statue. That doesn't work in the modern NFL. I can't think of anything Trey Lance was good at. I wouldn't compare him to Wilson at all. He's one of the biggest busts in NFL history. He demonstrates nothing. Wilson at least has some traits. His anticipation is off though.

The backup FA market was slim at best and the upcoming draft sucks further.

Jones, while his tape is mixed, has also experienced OC and HC churn. He performed OK under McDaniels, and the had to suffer under Patricia / Judge for a couple of seasons. Then he got traded to Jax under Pederson and Press fricking Taylor.

The floor is established for Jones, but the ceiling is much higher vs Lance, Wilson, Winston, etc under Shanahan.

Also, Mick Lombardi is our QB coach, and he was with NE when Jones got drafted. So my guess is that he vouched for him.

For Jones, he saw how 1 year under Kyle transformed Sam Darnold career trajectory. And if he shows good game tape should he need to play in '25, his stock will be higher and may become a trade candidate to be a starter in the league in '26.

Lastly, this allows the 49ers not need to stress for a backup QB in the draft. If there's a prospect they like and it's BPA, sure still take them. But they have needs on both sides of the ball and QB is now further down the list after this signing.

MAC JONES!
4 years later, Lance, Fields, Mac, and Wilson all on the move to their 3rd teams as busts. Only Trevor Lawrence from the big 5 that season remains with his original team, and hes just trying to keep his head above water. That QB class looked so good, and it ended being trash.

So I guess Kyle wanted Mac before someone talked him into lance

Yeah, Kyle has openly said that Mac and Lance were his top two qbs. Which is strange to me. Polar opposites - like he was deciding between a play style.

I never understood why he had 0 interest in fields. I'd really like to hear his breakdown of all of them

That's happens when you're drafted to a bad organization.

Zach Wilson - obviously has a nice physical skill set but just too emotionally immature and selfish. I actually liked him the least coming out of the draft.

Mac - when he had a quality OC, he was a pro bowler. His next few years he was royally screwed. I don't think he's amazing or anything but I think BBs horrible OC decisions really derailed his career and confidence. The stability here for the next two years should really help him.

fields - I liked him a lot and think the bears gave him a poop sandwhich. He's a great athlete but I think he struggles reading the entire field but serviceable.

lance - ive ranted enough about him. I hope he finds a practice squad but he's shown he can't really be a third qb. So. I doubt the league will have a spot for him for much longer if he doesn't make large leaps

I honestly don't think they knew who they wanted until the day of. I have no way to prove it but that's my opinion.
Always thought it was for Jones & then they changed their mind.

Why is it always some conspiracy theory? Obviously they looked into Mac as well.

We were swinging for the fences for our next FQB, ESPECIALLY after trading down. Of course they are going to look into all the top prospects.

And then both realized he's not it. Sadly, Lance wasn't it neither. Or Wilson. Or Lawrence. Or Fields...It was the best draft class on paper, that turned into one of the worst historically.

Was hoping Tanner Mordecai showed enough in training camp and preseason to take the #2 job. Well I think he can get the 3rd spot at least.

Purdy
Jones
Mordecai

Better than what was last season.

Yeah, not a terrible room and brings some stability for the next few years, IMO.
