You didn't state a fact. You stated a poorly supported opinion.

career backup baby

You talking about your boy Fields or your boy Wilson? As they too are off to their 3rd team in 5 years.

Fields was my guy and last I checked he got 2yr $40 deal to start for a team. Not a 2yr $7M deal to be a backup.

That would be his boy Trey Lance, who doesn't even have a 3rd team yet. lol j/k NY

But I can tell he approves of the signing.

If mac jones was signed to be our starter or brought in as potentially being the FQB - I'd be throwing a tantrum.

as a back up for cheap? I'm happy with that. Especially a vet player who can potentially win us a couple games in a pinch, If Brock is injured.

He's a backup level QB it was painfully obvious throughout the whole draft process. He is where he's supposed to be in terms of what the league thinks he is now.

Fields was my guy too but let's not pretend he would've been worth the trade up either. If anything there's a chance we get stuck with him longer than we were stuck with Trey.

The real issue was the trade-up itself. I was really excited when we made the trade but it was a colossally bad move in hindsight. Trevor was the only QB worth anything remotely close to what we gave up.
I mean seriously... think about it for a second... Mac was Kyle's guy in that draft. To be fair, trading the first rounders for a guy who is out of the league in five years is a boneheaded move no matter how you slice it up... and you cannot make an excuse for that one. John and Kyle s**t the bed on that one. That said... a lot of GMs were fooled by Trey. Dude had a ton of upside (size, speed, athleticism) but in the end, he just was too raw. And the NFL stands for Not For Long. This league is about now... show what you got or next man up. That said, Trey would have likely gone in the first round in that draft anyways.

Now fast forward a few years. Mac is available in the same year we are trying to extend Brock. Is Mac an eliet passer? No. Is he an elite runner? No. But we do not need him to be... we don't need him to be THE guy... we just need him to be A guy. Kyle is certain he can win with Mac... but he'd RATHER do so with Brock. Signing Mac virtually guarantees Brock signs a deal AND does not hold out. Signing Mac also guarantees that the Niners don't overpay for Brock, who (as much as I love the kid) still has a lot of doubters and a ton to prove. Mac then slips into a really solid number two role. Brock signs a two or three year (show me) deal and at that point either gets paid or moves on. THIS is a genius signing by Lynch.

Fields probably has a bit more staying power because he is great runner, but he had the same problem Lance had in that he's a project as a passer. Not a great fit for a team in the middle of a SB run.

Agree with the bolded.

I just don't buy this narrative. I just don't.

There is simply no way Kyle got swayed towards another QB. Much less one with a completely different play style.

I could MAYBE see it as "I'm good with Mac or Trey, and I like Mac a little more right now, but let's evaluate some more…" but that's it at the most.

There is no way Kyle agreed to the trade with his focus exclusively on Mac, and then somewhere in the middle or even on draft day said "welp fans are unhappy with Mac so gotta go with Trey instead!" None. If he cares what we think then he shouldn't be an NFL HC.
So basically we traded 3 first round picks for Trey Lance and Mac Jones. How is that not a win?

,,, I'll show myself out.

Not a fan of Jones and his antics on the field. He's a little crybaby let's be honest. But for a backup QB, I think it's a good idea. He didn't cost a lot of money. He knows how to play the position. It's way, way better than Brandon Allen. He doesn't have the athletiscm of Dobbs but he's more accurate IMHO.
Now, Jones is not a threat at all for Purdy. So I don't see how it changes anything for Purdy's contract negociations. As if Kyle would start Jones over Purdy.
I remember when some weirdos thought that Darnold would be the starter over Purdy and well surprise, surprise Purdy was way better in camp and pre-season even if he came back from a massive elbow injury.

Ever take a look at the historical list of the Jet's starting quarterbacks? This is going to fit right in. Jones is better off following in Darnolds's shoes.

What's funny is I don't have a problem with the signing in and of itself at all, either. I'm just not liking that old narratives are being brought back up lol. Something like 2/3 of the fanbase was loudly and vehemently against drafting this guy in 2021 (myself included—I firmly believed he was a decent pick at #12 and an abysmal pick at #3, that simple) and at the end of the day, no QB available at pick #2 let alone #3 overall was even close to worth what we gave up.

What's crazy is, after the 2021 season, people were ready to crown Mac as the consensus best QB in that draft. I'm not joking. He had the best rookie season by far (even better than Lawrence) and people were talking about how the Patriots dynasty was possibly going to get extended. That went out the window so fast. This league is brutal.

Oh man the "I told you so" guys sure were loud after that season. Wonder where they all went.
Trey Lance now has to sign with the Bears.

And we got a 4th rounder back as well lol
Have a feeling we're going to play hardball with Purdy now. Can see this dragging on for a long time.
