I think he's gonna have a simpler role here and put his hand in the dirt and go.

Would people be cool if he turns into a JPP like player? I mean that's a 10 yr+ starter in the league. IMO this was a good safe pick that fits what we need

Anytime you have to make excuses about a first round pick, why he didn't do something…. That's not your guy. Pass.

So facts regarding his situation - which Williams was a stud at, are excuses? No one is making excuses for why he wasn't good, cause he was Very good/excellent. He was excellent AT WHAT HE WAS ASKED TO DO IN HIS SCHEME AND ROTATION.

bulldogs weren't trying to make him a flashy stat kinda guy. They were using him to do what he can do to make the overall team better.

At worst he is versatile excellent run defender. We need that like we need oxygen. That's an excellent grab for a 20 year old with a lot of untapped potential to become a monster

So you're telling me you didn't watch the film by basically saying this…gotcha

also we're acting like he didn't do anything as a pass rusher which is objectively b******t. Dude had like 400 snaps in his career in true pass rush attempts.

if he had 15 sacks this yr he's going over Carter, we weren't drafting top 3. Sacks imo are such a crap stat

So what is the main issue for this guy to make him drop to 11?

Is it just his sack total and injury history?

I can think of an obvious one...scheme fit. If you run a 4-3 and 4-3 wide 9, he's almost perfect for an edge setter/pass rusher DE. If not, you're probably not gonna draft him any where higher with other guys more deserving. Although, Shanahan and Lynch thought he would go before #11, so there was at least 1 other team that fits.

I think he could have gone to the Saints. The ankle injury and lackluster 2024 season made him drop

It's really that simple.

It really came down to other teams have bigger needs at other impactful positions as well. Saints needed a OT and there's nothing after the first couple went.
Can't imagine what this thread would have been like if they had traded up for him like Lynch said they tried to do. If he balls out to his potential this thread will be a 'didn't age well' quote machine.

Tbh my skepticism comes from wondering if this staff can actually get the most out of him. They don't have a great resume for developing edges. They played AA at edge and it was always half assed imo. The moment he was back inside they were improved etc. let's hope we hit a home run here.

This staff has developed multiple defensive linemen in their tenure here. It's not only guys that we drafted that have gone on to have better careers after spending some time with Kris Kocurek and Saleh.

Aldon had three sacks his last year in college and the same exact number of sacks total as Williams in more snaps. If you look at the scouting reports on both, they are very similar. Georgia rotates almost as many defensive linemen as anyone in college, they are not trying to get their guys drafted high, they are trying to win games. You make the mistake of assuming that if a guy doesn't have a ton of sacks it can only be because he is not good, which is not the way it is. He played the entire year with a high ankle sprain and still had a better final season in the NCAA than Aldon did. It's okay if you don't like the pick, I wanted Nolen or Graham, but they got someone who will help immediately, and possibly mature into a stud under the tutelage of bosa and Coach K. I am happy with the pick as I never thought he'd make it out of the top 10.

49ers have been missing a difference maker in the middle of their Dline since they passed on Wilfork!!!!

should have gone Nolen instead of a sackless DE "with a high motor". You guys do realize this is an oxymoron.

lynch and Kyle gon' lynch and Kyle. Fall in love with a guy. They never seem to learn do they. Except for Bosa who's a slam dunk what edge have they correctly identified????? Drake Jackson??? 🤮🤮🤮

steelers took that DT from Oregon I bet he's even better than our new guy

Charles Omenihu, Jordan Willis, Samsun Ebukam, and Arden Key. Not our draft picks but three of the four guys who were going nowhere until we traded for them.

How did Aldon Smith's sack numbers look in college? Travon Walker's? You do realize that all good pass rushers do not put up high sack numbers in college?
Boy did I nail this pick. I said earlier in the week that no matter who the Niners picked there would be people saying it was terrible.

People complaining about his lack of production without acknowledging that he played on a bad ankle in system that didn't use his pass rushing to it's fullest extent. NFL network was saying his best traits are more suited for the wide 9. Yes the Niners need interior help but they needed an edge guy too. You can't take everyone. I see fans posting that they should get Williams from OSU or Grant from Michigan in the 2nd round. Sorry guys they're gone. That's what haappens in the real draft.

This is so underwhelming a pick...

Him getting 5 sacks and matching his college production would be considered a good season and we wasted a first round pick on him...

Some of you guys overrate sack production in college to absurd levels. I still remember when people were trying to knock Bosa because he couldn't hit double digit sacks in college.

College, especially top schools like Georgia use heavy rotations for their players because of all the commits they have. You can't add all these 5* and 4* recruits and then play them 5% of the snaps. They share the load.

Williams led them in sacks as an 18 year old true freshman on a National Championship squad. You have to be realistic about your expectations.
Which category will he fall in?

Thomas
Foster
Mcglinchey
Lance
Kinlaw

Bosa
Aiyuk

Bosa was a no brainer. Lynch has missed on quite a bit. Anyone else would be fired from their job based on the above. We shall see about williams, but lynch does not deserve anyone's trust at this point.

Add Danielle Hunter and JJ Watt to that list. I'm never doubting guys who have insane physical measurable and play with a relentless motor. Those types usually succeed with good coaching to help them put everything together in the pros.
had no idea who he was

The thing about this guy that I'm struggling with is that he is a DEFENSIVE END and his main job is to rush the passer. I would expect a top 11 DE pick in the NFL at the very least register double-digit sacks in COLLEGE. That's like drafting a WR who can't catch.

sigh...
