More injuries: Cal is nursing other noteworthy injuries, too. Starting center Chris Guarnero had surgery Tuesday to repair torn ligaments in his thumb; he could return to practice later this week.

The receiving corps also absorbed some blows. Tight end Tad Smith sustained a knee injury of unknown severity during Tuesday's scrimmage and wide receiver Michael Calvin had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday and will miss "a couple of weeks," according to Tedford.

Calvin had reconstructive surgery on the same knee in October after tearing his ACL.

Actually Tad Smith (our best TE) is out for the year with a torn acl

Time to see what Ladner can do

He was a 5th year senior also. That has got to suck.

It sucks but after reading about it, it didn't seem like Tad was far and away our best TE. Tedford said they were 5 deep in the TE position and I didn't expect much production from our TE this year anyways. With JB, Shane, and our improved WR core (a year older), I didnt see the TE playing a big role in the receiving area but mostly needed in the run blocking area.

The way I see it, our success this season will fal on the back of Kevin Riley. Our defense will be just fine. OUr secondary will make up for the loss of our LB's. And with a front 3 that is very capable of getting after the QB, I still see our defense as one of the tops in the Pac-10. Our special teams could be just that...special. With JB on kickoffs and Syd on punts our return game could get us points quick. Larson (Punter) is a stud and can pin teams back into their zone. Our kicking game needs an improvement after last season but after Georgio spend the year away from soccer and now kicking field goals, he could turn into an adequate kicker. Our OL will be hurt by the loss of Mack but still look to be as dominant as last year. I believe everyone else returns which will make the unit strong. The WR aren't anything special but should give us more production than last year. Nothing more needs to be said about JB & Shane. So all that is left is the QB. Riley will win the starting job. What bugs me about Riley is that he has brain farts way too often. With the way the team is set-up, he doesn't need to be a hero. He needs to manage the clock, make the tough throw when needed, but mostly just play turnover free. OK Im done! ROLL ON YOU BEARS
