How was trading Perkins a mistake?

Celtics needed a long athletic player who could play a wing guy like Lebron come play time. They thought Green was it. He wasn't. The Celtics are trying to win NOW. Perkins offered them intangibles now...but long-term doesn't have much value as far as being a 2nd or 3rd option.

If they wanted to win NOW it would have been better to have a presence in the middle. When they traded Perkins and old Shaq got injured they didn't have one. Making them vulnerable.

I think Perkins was a one in a long line of mistakes by Ainge this year.

1) You guys DID need a guy who could guard the elite wings like Wade & LeBron. So why not re-sign Tony Allen? He's one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, and only signed a 3 year/$9.5M deal with Memphis. That's one of the best contracts in the league, IMO.

2) Do you realize that you only had 5 players left from the team that made the Finals LAST YEAR? KG, Rondo, Allen, Pierce, & Big Baby. That's it. That's CRAZY roster turnover for a team that was incredibly cohesive.

3) You guys left your center position in the hands of Nenad Krstic and the perpetually injured O'Neal's...who ended up being perpetually injured. You had a nice backup in Semih Erden, and then you traded him for nothing so you could sign Troy Murphy...who didn't play.

There isn't really much the Cs can do to retool their roster due to the cap. People seriously overrate Kendrick Perkins. He's a JAG at center as far as I'm concerned. Big Zeke didn't dominate this series in the paint, nor did Bosh. Wade/Bron killed them on the perimeter; that's on Allen/Pierce and speaks to the Celtics lack of speed athleticism on the perimeter save Rondo.
Man, f**k Robert Horry!
Jump on the Lebron bandwagon bc the America is falling in love with him again now that he is winning

That's always your argument with Lebron.

Just remember the guy who took over the game late in the 4th quarter and closed out the Celtics was Lebron James...

LOL. No it isn't. Not if your comprehension level extends beyond that of a 4th grader.

You should probably leave this one in 4ML's hands. He disagrees with me about most everything, but at least he's capable of cogent conversation.

Not true, I agree with you on whole host of issues...but we disagree mostly when it comes to Lebron and Kobe.

...and I hope you know that I really respect your views, even when I disagree with them. I don't dismiss or take your comments lightly.

I love Wade, so I'm not gonna argue against Wade. Wade was special today (and as you pointed out - in this whole series) and kept the Heat in the game, and Lebron was spectacular in the last few minutes.

Many (including you and I) were concerned if Lebron and Wade can play together. I'm not concerned one bit about that anymore. I'm really really happy to see them get past Celtics - but if they fail against the Bulls in conf. finals - all this means nothing.

Ya, I very much respect your opinion as well.

The thing about LeBron & Wade playing together though is that Miami's offense really hasn't been anything special. They're good, but considering that they have two of the best individual offensive players in their era, an all-star level 3rd option + spot up shooters, they don't produce at a high level on that end of the court. I think both guys dribble way too much when they have the ball, and it's led to a team that's really only so-so on the offensive end.

But good God, I can't think of a faster defensive team than this one in my lifetime. LeBron & Wade are the biggest part of that, being that they're probably the fastest SF & SG in the league, respectively. Plus, you have a legit rim-protector in Anthony, and one of the better defensive PGs in the league in Chalmers. That's really where their bread has been buttered.

I'd love to see a Finals matchup of OKC vs. Miami, because OKC is one of the only teams in the league where Miami doesn't have a HUGE speed/athleticism advantage over their opponent. Dallas would be interesting too, because they're the best passing team left in the playoffs.

Definitely OKC will be able to match Miami's athleticism. I do agree that offense isn't at it's best...but I personally don't like their spot up shooters. They are highly inconsistent. But, both Lebron and Wade can excel together, and in the beginning of the season - both of their numbers were significantly down.

If Mike Miller played like the Mike Miller we've all come to know, things on the offensive end could be different. Chalmers and Anthony flat out suck on the offensive side, and Bibby and Jones have gotten a LOT of open looks - and have been so-so. I do agree, Anthony has been a pleasant surprise on the defensive end.

Yes - both Lebron and Wade dribble too much, that was the case with Lebron in Cleveland too. To me, it's still work in progress, but I can see now that these two can play well together. I'm starting to see some post play from both of them (although not nearly as often as I would like to see).

On defense, both are great, especially Wade with ridiculous ability to block shots.

Lebron blocks pretty many shots too. Mostly in transition on fast break defense.

He does, but Wade can block shots in many different ways. Both are pretty good, Wade with his quickness and Lebron with his size and speed.

Well remember we beat Miami 2 times in a row with no Allen or Perkins so that's why Ainge rolled the dice mainly. I was 50/50 with the trade but yeah huge mistake after the obvious. Even with no Tony Allen we destroyed team chemistry and our defensive identity. Who cares about a backup for Pierce, give the damn rookie Luke more playing time, and the same for Bradley until West came back...would pay dividends later down the line.

It very well may have cost us the #1 seed too. We'd probably be prepping for the winner of a long drawn out 7 game series between the heat and bulls at this point.

We need better perimeter defenders, toughness, youth, and scoring. This is a pipe dream and i'm ignoring cap numbers but here's who i'd sign for the C's if I could.

Marc Gasol and A. Afflao

Resign Ray Allen to become the NBA's 6th man of the year haha, D. West, J. O'Neal (if he's not retiring), Jeff Green, and Big Baby (he needs to lose weight though damnit).

Core:

Rondo/West
Afflao/Allen
Pierce/Green
Garnett/Davis
Gasol/O'Neal

Ain't going to happen eh Lundy?

I was quite surprised that they let Tony Allen go as well. Especially for how cheap he went for.

The Perkins trade cannot be evaluated fairly until summer 2012. If ainge actually gets what he wants (Dwight Howard) it won't look like a mistake, especially if Green ends up starting and producing. ainge never intended on giving Perkins the $$ he wanted and decided to get something over nothing.

Don't be surprised if he trades more of the championship core (anyone not named Rondo) for Howard or any other big FA for summer 2012.

I don't remember anyone up in arms about the Celts letting Tony Allen go when he signed last year. He was decent last year, but he had zero Offense.

I still disagree about the Perkins trade. He offered them very little on Offense. His rebounding is much better than anything they have no doubt. But again, with no one to cover Lebron, I don't see how Perkins would have helped that. Lebron is still gonna go to the rack if Perk was playing. The problem with the Green move, was that Green was dreadful. Not sure if he couldn't adjust or what. If he played better, no one would mentioned a thing about Perkins.
they should go after NeNe
