Pirates are 3.5 back. Cards hearing footsteps...
They've been on our tail for a while. Pirates and Cubs are both legit.
best division in the MLB this year
Might end up having 3 teams in the playoffs.
I still dont understand the purpose of that 2nd wild card spot. I know it gets more fanbases involved in the playoff chase later into the season, but it basically devalues the wild card spot.
The entire point of the wild card was to give a non-division winner the chance to win the WS. Essentially they were saying "sometimes theres a great team that gets left out in the cold because they just happened to be in the same division as the best team in the league".
What makes no sense is, adding the 2nd wild card spot has punished the wild card team. Now you have to win a 1 game playoff, even if you were well ahead of the 2nd wild card team in the standings. You could be 5+ wins better than the 2nd team, yet the only advantage you reap from it is home field advantage in a sudden death series.
Then the winner who emerges from that game enters the LDS having to go on the road to face the best team in the league, having already burned its ace. So now the very wild card team that baseball put in place to give someone else a chance has been knocked in the knees with a pipe and spun around 10 times and pushed into the first round...
Obviously the Giants overcame all that last season, so it CAN still work, but it took a superhuman performance. It just feels counterproductive.
