To your point, they are +33000 to win the WC, meaning $100 would get you $33,000 if they won. That's more of an underdog than the Jacksonville Jaguars are to win the next Super Bowl.
US is a huge underdog just to get out of their group. Even Ghana is given better odds.
Yea...and the talent is growing faster in other countries. The talent in Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Germany is stupendous and it's always getting better. Spain can field two teams at the WC and both can advance to knockout stages - and their biggest enemy is hunger with all the success in the last 6 years. Argentina has so many options in attack that they left Tevez off their team. Tevez can probably start for 90% of the teams in the WC. Germany will be missing one of their key players and they won't miss a beat. Brazil has so much young talent - they are always in the mix.

The US will never be big time players on the global soccer front. Not as long as our athletes funnel into about 4-5 other sports ahead of soccer

Exactly. We can't win the WC anymore than Germany could field an NFL team capable of knocking off the 49ers.

Thing I hate about the world cup: most people living in/born in the US root for countries their family is from because the US isn't good at soccer.

I never understood why that matters to ppl. Why do ppl care so much about who is rooting for whom?

I can't stand Brazil...but rooting for Neymar (Més que un club) to score a goal or two.
I'm gonna support doods from FC Barca...rooting hard for Argentina (Messssssiiiiii) and hope Spain does well too. Hope Sanchez has a good WC too.

It's a weird dynamic for me... I'm of the belief that you root for your national team in the same way that you root for your local club/league teams. That being said I know of people out here in SF that root for the Cowboys as their primary team .

It's just a matter of having some pride for your area/where you grew and not jumping on bandwagons just because the home team is bad. If it was the same way I would have become a Laker fan when I moved to LA 10+ years ago.
I'm half Italian and half Portuguese and I'm rooting for the US even though the teams my family is technically from are better.
