Here's hoping Klinman meant ,"Let's win one game at a time," rather than what he said about realistically not winning the cup

Seriously.

Klinsman was hired to figure out a way to win NOW. Not in 4 more years.

hiring snipers to take out the opposition?

or bribing FIFA? Oh wait, that cat is out of the bag now.

Do ppl actually believe that US has a chance to win this World Cup or next World Cup or the World Cup after that because they hired a great coach? The talent gap between the top teams and US is so large - I don't see US catching up anytime soon.

Um, yeah no.

Group of death. It would be the biggest miracle since the 1980 Winter Olympics... maybe ever in sports if the USA Won the World Cup, let alone beat out Portugal and Germany, and oh yeah... the team that eliminated the US the last two world cups.

I just hope we can be competitive and dont get blown out... the team is getting better, we just need better athletes playing professional soccer that are born in the US. They are all playing football and basketball.

To your point, they are +33000 to win the WC, meaning $100 would get you $33,000 if they won. That's more of an underdog than the Jacksonville Jaguars are to win the next Super Bowl.

US is a huge underdog just to get out of their group. Even Ghana is given better odds.

This. No, I don't actually believe we have a legit chance of winning the WC anytime soon, but I do like what Klinsman's trying to do. A win over a team like Germany or Portugal would be our WC (probably not going to happen either, lol). I'd settle for finally beating Ghana at this point.

Ooops... thanks, bro. Even with that, I think the final match is the same.
USA won't win a World Cup, EVAR
The US' best bet to advance past the group stage is:
- Beat Ghana
- Have the Portugal/Germany game NOT end in a tie
-The US then needs to at least tie against the loser of the Portugal/Germany game.

This way, the US would at least tie for 2nd place most likely and then goal differencial (I believe) would be the deciding factor to advance.

For example:
1st round:
- Germany beats Portugal and US beats Ghana
- Germany and US have 3 points, the others have zero

2nd round:
- US ties Portugal and Germany beats Ghana
- Germany has 6 points, US has 4 points, Portugal has 1 point, Ghana has zero

3rd round:
- Germany beats US and Portugal beats Ghana
- Germany has 9 points, US and Portugal each has 4 points
- Goal difference would decide who advances along with Germany.

Of course, Ghana could surprise and beat/tie one of the other two teams and this could help the US. The key, to me, is the game against Ghana. The US HAS to win that game.

what's the best way for a soccer noob like myself to follow the world cup? i know almost nothing but i'd kind of like to get more involved and know what's going on.

follow espnfc.com/scores so you can see what time the games are. Then watch every game. Easy

Brazil
Mexico

Spain
Chile (I really like Chile - could surprise and finish 1st)

Colombia
Ivory Coast

Uruguay
England/Italy (Can't decide which of these giants advance...if I've to bet, it will be Italy)

France
Ecuador

Argentina
Bosnia

Germany
Portugal (barely...Ghana is no joke and US can play a spoiler)

Belgium
Russia

Again this is right now and I'm gonna try to revisit tomorrow and see if I change my mind

Brasil, Croatia
Spain, Netherlands
Colombia, Greece
Uruguay, England
Switzerland, Ecuador
Argentina, Bosnia
Germany, Portugal
Belgium, Russia

Group E turned out to be a real tough one for me, you could flip the teams for all I care and France was in the mix too

Brazil, Croatia
Spain, Netherlands
Colombia, Ivory Coast
Italy, Uruguay
Switzerland, Ecuador
Argentina, Bosnia
Germany, US
Belgium, Russia

the big 4 imo is Germany, Brazil, Spain, Argentina.

But honestly the beauty of the world cup is similar to March Madness (with less upsets) in that you will enjoy turning on any game and watching it, even though you might not have a clue about the team or players. Some groups are more competitive than others, but every game will be fun.
