He had a solid 10 year run, but did have several "okay" seasons during that span, 30 HRs 80ish rbis, and a low BA. Only got close to 200 hits once, before that mostly 150ish hits, and not a great OBP either.

If he played in a different era, probably.

Edit: I take back the OBP comment, thought he struck out more. But then his base stealing numbers are extremely low as well for a CF...

If he played 15 years sooner or 15 years later i think he gets in.
15 sooner his defense would be extremely valued, like ozzie smith. And it would over ride his BA.
In 10 years BA is not viewed as a major stat, OBP and slugging will over ride it. His defensive metrics will be the asset, and with moneyball his lack of steals will not matter much.

But he played in the steroid era, and i think that will hurt a lot of players on the fringe.

You might be right. But a 15.5% increase in votes is very encouraging. Hopefully the trend continues!
Clemens and Bonds only have one more year of eligibility right? b******t if they don't get in.
Well I guess we don't have to worry about Curt Schilling being in the Hall of Fame.

You nailed it with the bolded sentence. I think HOF players should be obvious. Afterall, its the Hall of Fame and truly meant for the elite of the elite. I do think there have been mistakes and several players worse than Jones are in. But regardless, I just dont think his case is strong enough. Now Bonds, on the other hand, should easily be in even with the steroids issue.

And I believe that Jones is the elite of the elite.

For 10 years, he averaged 34 homeruns, 103 RBIs and 97 runs while playing the best defense the sport has ever seen (GG every year). That is as elite as they come. You could count on one hand how many players in baseball were better than him for that decade straight (and closer to a peace sign, than all 5 fingers).

For me the .254 career batting avg. is tough.

He should be in. I dont agree with that he says, but he didnt cheat and his political views shouldn't keep him out.

Probably would have gotten in next year which is weird that he'd take himself out.

Yeah. Absolutely ridiculous if they don't get in.

Hes using it as a way to make the BBWAA look bad for leaving him out for 9 years over politics.

He'll get in via veterans committee.

He's right though and why I said the system is broke. They need to relook who votes and why. There are amazing players that were horrible people in the HOF already. So why the voters think his stupid political takes should factor in what kind of player he was is ridiculous. And until players start removing themselves from the voting and allowing the veterans to decide, it won't be fixed. Unfortunately that could mean some won't make the HOF until they're dead. I am not saying Schilling is a HOFer, just that the system is stupid.
