I have read a few places that this contract does not include opt out years. We will see if this is true or not.

$24M a season for an elite player is not a crazy contract.
It is when its 14 years. It is when you are a small market team.
Sure every team can afford a contract like that, maaaaaybe even 2, but what happens if that player gets injured or stops performing? Chris Davis as one example. Now that team is stuck with a huge contract and cant afford to sign other good players or resign their own good players.

It isnt like that deal would have gone away next year in my opinion. Only time will tell if its a good deal or not. He will have to be healthy and have huge years for it to be worth it for the Padres
The more I think about this, the better the deal is for the Padres.

Ya...that's probably the most insane part in all of this. There was absolutely no reason to do this contract this quickly.

He has only played 143 games. He's not elite yet. This is way too early in his career to pay him this kinda money.

It'll either be a bargain in the future or a bust that they are stuck with, all depends on Tatis, who I think will only get better, so in 3 years he might say, damn I'm worth 35 million a year now !

Maybe adding Arenado is the incentive for Cardinals fans to actually sell out all their playoff games next time.
