If you count Bum's, thats 7 in the first 7 weeks. MLB is on pace for 25 no hitters this year. lol
I think the baseball is a huge reason for pitching dominating hitting. Cold weather is certainly a factor early in the season but its way more than that.
There was 7 no hitters in the first 3 months of the season in 1917.

I guess the technology was legit back then.

Yeah. The "cheating pitchers" thing is way overblown. Pitchers have been using substances for better grip far before "spin rate" was a motivator. Its not a new concept.

Losing that way to one of the worst sports franchises of all time? Ugh.

Pretty sure they were spitting and s**tting on the same ball for the entire game, by the end the ball was nearly black.

They only changed the rule because someone died from a headshot and couldn't see it late in the game.

Not according to trevor bauer, he predicts that 70% of pitchers use something and that each team has their own recipe. That was 2018 it's probably higher now.

"I've been chasing spin rate since 2012. For eight years I've been trying to figure out how to increase the spin on my fastball because I'd identified it way back then as such a massive advantage. I knew that if I could learn to increase it through training and technique, it would be huge. But eight years later, I haven't found any other way except using foreign substances."
Tony La Russa is everything that's bad about baseball.

99, read up on what they are saying. They used it back then for grip, now it's to increase spin rates. It's a different kind of substance. Think of it more like modern day spit balls, not just sticky stuff to grip it. Spin rates are up, but so are walks and batters being hit. That didn't happen with the old sticky stuff you are talking about.

I think there's something to it but not the only factor. Shifts, players trying to hit homers, and now there are a ton of pitchers throwing upper 90's.

But look at Cole. He was average in Pittsburgh, then went to Houston, who was rumored to be the leader in pitchers using it, and became a 300 million dollar pitcher. Oh, and most of their staff became stud pitchers.

Its strange to me that baseball wants more offense because it sells, but pitching is essentially ahead of the curve in counteracting their changes. I guess they're going to have to put league officials in the clubhouses to roam around and spot violations like the NFL sidelines.

IMO they should outlaw the shift.

Man, I've gone back and forth on that. Sometimes i think they should ban the shift, then sometimes I think I'm wrong because it's a smart defensive adjustment. And it's mind bottling how they don't beatitudes with a bunt or slash. But that would be horrible to watch also.

Its like in the NFL when you need to have 7 men on the LOS, and at least 1 eligible receiver as the left or right most player on the line. It sets a basic standard. I'd be in favor of just painting a couple white lines that marks where the infielders have to line up between.
