I know all that but guys like him and Payton deserved rings. Payton at least got one with Miami but the Jazz franchise had gone to utter s**t thanks to Kevin O'Connor wasting picks on guys like DeShawn Stevenson, Scott Padgett, Quincy Lewis, Curtis Borchardt, and Raul Lopez. Wasting money on guys like Mark Jackson, John Starks and John Amechi. They gave Karl and John no real younger help so I didn't blame him at the time for leaving. The organization was cheap and couldn't scout worth a damn. Harping and Marshall don't make up for all that other garbage.
IMO the ring would've only meant something if it was in Utah. Jumping on the Lakers for one season just to get one would've been a technicality. He just wanted to be along for the ride. Nobody credits Gary Payton for winning a ring with the Heat. His name just gets taken off the list of guys who never won.
It just seems weirdly desperate when stars nearing retirement join the best team to get a ring. His legacy would've meant more if he had gone start to finish with the Jazz and passed Kareem. Ive always said, hundreds of players have rings, but theres only one all time leading scorer. He should've prioritized that after he missed out on his chances at a championship.
Being along for the ride would've meant that they were bench players that barely played. Malone and GP were both playing over 30 min a game and were the next leading scorers behind Kobe and Shaq. Gary averaged nearly 30 min a game the next season with the Heat. So he does credit for helping them win a ring.
And I'm not sure if he even passes Kareem if he's playing just one more year, he would've had to average a good bit over 20 a game and play the whole season. Either way, that wouldn't have been more important seeing how that record is gonna be broken soon.
Wait, what thread is this?
