I dont think it has anything to do with the Giants quite frankly. If it was Boston-SF or NYY-SF they would have big ratings. The Royals have ZERO draw. I think any team in the NL vs KC would get low ratings.
Unfortunately this is pretty much why ESPN has a universe of maybe 5 or 6 teams they'll televise games...a LOT of Yankess and Red Sox, with some Dodgers, Tigers, Cards, Angels.
As a baseball fan, even if the Giants weren't in I would definitely want to watch the Royals because I like they way they play, but I'm probably the outlier whereas the "casual fan" is who they're trying to draw.
There's probably a chicken-and-egg argument in there, that if they showed the lesser-known teams more often that might generate more interest so when one of these teams ends up in the postseason where it's a national audience then they might attract viewers. But easy money is just pencil in about 125 games with the above-named teams and call it a day.
Side note, last night's game killed in the local ratings, think I heard KTVU got a 29.
