***2024 MLB Regular Season Thread***

Finally this sack of s**t is leaving baseball.

MLB umpire Ángel Hernández is retiring effective immediately, ending a controversial three-decade-long career that in recent years turned Hernández into a constant source of consternation with players and a social-media punching bag among fans, sources familiar with Hernández's plans told ESPN.

Hernández, 62, reached a settlement to leave Major League Baseball, according to a source, and will retire after umpiring thousands of games since his debut in 1991.

The team lacks a lot of talent. No manager is going to make us good.

I'm not a fan of this. Because it's MLB records. I get that the Negro Leagues had some of the best players coming from there, but it wasn't the MLB. Just creates a grey area for what will be counted and whatnot. Ichiro's hits in Asia, etc

Not really because that was in another country. This was all due to segregation in the United States. It's not comparable.

Agree. But this is the only way those guys will get some recognition.

I know, it's just that every MLB player was facing MLB players... Josh Gibson was not always facing MLB level pitching, which 100% of mlb batters faced.

This was already done once before in the 1960's with other leagues that were considered professional. The Negro League should have been included. It wasn't and now it is. Not a big deal

Statistics are useful tools, but stats should always be coupled with context. Yeah, Gibson's stats were incredible and many consider him one of the best ever. But as you said, he wasnt facing MLB level players 100% of the time. Most people will understand that when discussing his statistics.
the reveal , i believe

Steve Phillips brought up an excellent point the other day. Maybe if the white mlb players had to face the better black players they wouldn't have been as good.

Ever think of that?

Exactly, there was more mediocre MLB talent back in the day that wouldn't sniff a baseball park outside of the one in their neighborhood if there were black and Hispanic players in the league.
