The San Francisco Giants Thread

I have no way of knowing or proving this, but I believe that's part of why Duvall went through a massive slump the last month after getting to off to a really fast start in April/May. He's probably thinking, "these f**kers are never going to give me a shot, so why bother????" The body language was bad and he just seemed out of it for awhile, but he seems back to form these last few days and of course ended the first half yesterday with a 3 HR game.

Doesn't have to be Cueto or Hamels (price would be prohibitive). Look 2nd tier free agents, like Peavy last year...those are typically the kinds of deals they make. Names like Kazmir, Yovani Gallardo or even Ian Kennedy could be had without giving up the farm (literally).

I dont think the Giants will be players at all for SP. They have 7 guys now in the mix and I just cant see a 2nd tier guy coming in. I honestly dont see them making any big move this year. Maybe a corner OF and then dump Maxwell but thats about it.

7 guys in the mix, but only 2 we can really count on (MadBum and Heston). We still don't really know what we'll get from Cain and Peavy the rest of the year, we know Vogey/Huddy/Petit can't be counted on to consistently deliver quality starts and we're certain Timmy is done as a Giant. Like they say, when you have too many QBs, you don't have any QBs.

If we can get one more quality/consistent arm, we might have a shot at the playoffs this year. I love what Gallardo has done this year in Texas and you can pretty much count on him making all his starts every year. Madbum, Hesto and Gallardo at the top of your rotation with the "rehabbing" veterans Cain and Peavy as your 4th/5th...I could work with that.

Maybe but I just dont see it happening at least right now. Peavy has looked good and Huddy in on his way back. Now that could change in 3 weeks if they are still within distance of the playoffs and there is a glaring need at SP. Not saying that Kazmir or Gallardo wouldnt be a nice upgrade but I think even they would cost too much at this moment.

Pretty stupid if that is the case but I will just call it as having a mini slump. There was no way he was going to keep up the pace he had. But I agree that he had to be frustrated and disappointed.

The problem now for Duvall is there is basically no spot for him when Aoki returns. I think he sits in AAA until Sept 1 unless there is an injury.

Neither would be cheap, you're right...but the only prospect to me that's "untouchable" is Beede. I just think if we're close in late July, we shouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger given our track record once we make the playoffs.

Basic human emotions when you put in a ton of work and are highly successful at something, but don't get the recognition/promotion you feel you deserve while others who have quantitatively performed worse than you get the call. Seems pretty common to let down for a bit, then pull yourself back up.

SO you would include Christian Arroyo lets say for a couple of months of Gallardo?

If I included Arroyo in a package, it would have to be for someone with more cache than Gallardo, but I would trade Arroyo for the right person, yes. In fact, I think Arroyo is more of a trade chip than an actual prospect for us, given the youth of our major league infield. IMO, Arroyo isn't a major league SS, and since we're doing pretty good at 2nd and 3rd, his real value to us is via trade (for the right deal ONLY, of course).

Such as.......?

I just dont want to do another Wheeler trade and give up a former #1 pick who is playing well for a 2 month rental.
As this is a reloading year, I'd rather stand pat and not give up prospects to get a pitcher, AT THIS MOMENT.

Obviously, Giants won't do s**t till we know where we stand at the end of this month.

July is going to be CRUCIAL to gain some ground, August - Sept 1st is a brutal stretch of games: Washington, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and then the Doyers. (not necessarily in that order)

Say a team signs David Price, Zack Greinke or someone like that next year to a long-term deal, but the team sucks and is looking to get out of long-term contracts (happened to San Diego this year, to Boston a few years ago, etc.). In that case, I'd include Arroyo to get someone like that (high quality, under contract for awhile).

Padres might be sellers. James Shields could be available.

Although, I don't want to deal Arroyo. Dude is a stud.

Personally not a fan of Shields and wouldn't ever trade Arroyo for him.

IMO, Arroyo's ceiling is an all-star 2nd baseman with solid glove skills, the potential to hit 12-15 HRs a year and compete annually for batting titles. Basically, he's a RH version of Joe Panik, which of course, we'll have under control for many years. So as nice as it would be to have that waiting in the wings, he's probably more valuable to us as a trade piece.

forgive me for mentioning his name here but... in a perfect world, Shields gets dealt to the Sox for fat Panda. then Giants fans can give him the business for the next few years at home and in SF.

He probably is more valuable as a trade piece. But as good of a story as Duffy is I want to see it over a longer period than 2 months and its nice to have a kid like Arroyo that could step in there. I am NOT saying that Duffy is a fluke or being critical in any way. (thats for Garce). I'm just thinking its nice to have a top prospect that could play either 2Bor 3B. If I am trading a #1 pick who is really producing it will be for someone controllable and really good.
