Kyle Crick may be slowly getting his control together in AA ball...only 1 walk in his last 5 relief appearances, with 10 strikeouts.
didn't get to watch the game, how did Leake look?

solid. Works quick. Had some bad luck plays so he pitched out of jams all day. Lots of DPs though which is nice. Made one bad pitch that sealed it for him. He got zero run support.

EDIT: I left out he has boss ass facial hair and wears high socks.

Fun Fact

Leake is the last player to go straight to MLB after being drafted.

Agreed...I'm cautiously optimistic about him as a RP with the stuff/mindset/potential to develop into a dominant closer. Went back this weekend and watched some of his more recent outings and he just looks like an entirely different pitcher than he did even at the start of July. Loose arm action, no stress delivery and very confident.

If he continues this progress we could see him in the SF bullpen as early as next year sometime.

That's encouraging, hopefully he is our long term #3 guy.

And in the short term, replacing Hudson is HUGE

I still would consider this to be a bit of a disappointment unless he truly becomes an elite closer. Wanted him to become Noah Syndergaard or Matt Harvey. You know.. a true #1 power arm in the rotation. The Giants have no one else in the system that fills that bill.

Agreed. I know elite closers are hard to find, and should be appreciated if we drafted a player that becomes just that. But that is absolutely not what I was hoping for for Crick. Like you said, was hoping for a front of the rotation power arm. Since it appears that he will not be that, it is a disappointment. Huge one IMO.

Maybe if we're lucky, Beede, Stratton (looks like a #5 starter at best) or Phil Bickford will be those starters with Bum and Heston, and hopefully Leake, with Crick, Strickland, Osich, etc. killing it from the bullpen. I also like Raffi Viscaino in our Dominican summer league. He's 7-0 with a strikeout per inning and good walk ratio and good size. We've got some good young arms, but it's so hard to project a 19 year old to the majors. Such a high failure rate.

It's not entirely out of the question that he leverages this turnaround and gets back to starting. I personally don't think the should (why mess with him now that he's on a roll) but it's always a possibility down the road.

Spent this weekend in AZ and got to watch Bickford pitch against the Royals rookie team. They don't have a gun at the complex, but if I had to guess, he was easily 94-96 and just blowing kids away. He's probably not going to be a Harvey/DeGrom-type, but once he gets stronger he could sit 95+.

Given the $50M or so the Giants will owe Matt Cain after this year he will still be in the mix for the next 2 years anyway. Bumgarner, Leake, Cain, Heston, and Peavy would likely be the rotation next year if Leake signs. 3 years down the road.. perhaps Beede and Bickford would replace Cain and Peavy. Hard to say but many think Bickford is also best suited to be a closer.
‏@AlexPavlovic Giants put Joe Panik on DL with lower back inflammation. Kelby Tomlinson called up.

Love Kelby Tomlinson's game and hope he pulls a Duffy/2014 where they just can't send him back down. IMO, KT is a faster-but-slightly older version of Duffy. Tough, hard-nosed gamer who can play 3 INF positions and knows how to handle the bat.

It might be too much to ask for Tomlinson to be like Duffy....but what if he is? Should be fun finding out. We've been pretty lucky lately. I'm ready to look at Hunter Cole on center of Pagan doesn't pick it up. He's another scrapper.
