The Giants considered Mike Leake a huge addition at the trade deadline. After one start, they had to subtract him.
Leake will not take his turn on Friday at Wrigley Field. The Giants scratched him because of a strained left hamstring, which he injured during normal conditioning activities earlier in the week at Atlanta.
Ryan Vogelsong will start in Leake's place and oppose Chicago Cubs left-hander Jon Lester, the pitcher the Giants recruited hard over the winter before he took a $155 million contract to play at the Friendly Confines.
Leake had an MRI exam that confirmed a mild strain, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. The club didn't make an immediate move to place Leake on the 15-day disabled list, hoping that he would miss just the one start. But he will be reevaluated on a daily basis, Bochy said.
"He wasn't doing anything different, just the normal sprints he does," Bochy said. "He thought it was a cramp and it didn't go away. … It's not worth the risk of starting him."
Leake played catch up to 120 feet on Thursday. He was coming off a relatively good debut in Texas in which he held the Rangers to two runs on eight hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of a 2-1 loss. The Giants acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds just prior to the July 31 trade deadline for minor league pitcher Keury Mella and third baseman Adam Duvall.
The injury is a bit unexpected because Leake's athleticism was among his best attributes. Following news of the trade, Bochy even said he wouldn't hesitate to use Leake as a pinch hitter or pinch runner on days he did not start.
The Giants certainly hope that Leake bounces back quickly. They know from experience – remember Carlos Beltran in 2011? — what it's like to make a big acquisition at the trade deadline only to lose the player to injury.

Has Heston been without his security blanket Buster previously?
Lol yes Sanchez caught his last 2 starts I believe. I know he caught the game down in SD & earlier this yr.
He's caught him more than Posey has especially in the minors

No Panik and Adrianza is s**t and Aoki isn't running as well as he was earlier in the year. Aoki and Pagan should for sure be swapped like you're insinuating though.
