The guy was loved in SF. But, he threw it all away. He couldn't keep himself in shape and turned down a huge contract over 100M to stay with his teammates shortly after he said in front of everyone that he wanted to come back.
I am glad he is gone and thankful that Boston bailed the Giants out of a HUGE (pun intended) mistake. I dont root against him like I do against Dusty Baker teams. Afterall, he was a big cog in 2 of our WS titles. But I wont root for him either.
Dont disagree with this at all. Not rooting for someone is not the same as name calling and pure hatred. The fact that so many Giants are quick to turn on a guy who was instrumental in bringing the team you love 2 rings upsets me. Dude could be 500 pounds and eat himself out of baseball, and I would never have bad things to say about the guy. He was one of the keys to the glory years of the team we all love, and for that I will be forever grateful.
You seem to forget about the part where the Giants offered him above market value to stay, but because they lowballed him (because of weight problems) earlier that year, he spurned them.
He went to Boston, and started talking all kinds of crap about SF. He dissed his teammates, who he couldn't have won those rings without. He also failed to recognize the Giants for signing him and developing him.
Pablo burned his bridges to the ground. He deserves to have every Giants fan rooting against him now. To have a successful career here, win titles, and have the overwhelming support of the fans, despite laziness, he should be nothing but grateful of his time here. But, he chose to be a punk, and talk crap on his way out the door.
And then Aubrey Huff came out and told everyone how the Giants clubhouse really felt about him. He wasnt exactly this warm, loveable Panda character that everyone assumed.
Pablo has no right to still have any of the support of his former team or fans in the bay area after the petty way he left.
Maybe he and the Giants had a bad break up, but you cant deny he was a huge part of the team in his prime years. He loved the fans and the fans loved him back. I'm with SteveWallace. You may disagree with the business side of how he left the Giants, but on the field, he was one of the greatest Giants of all time and when he's done with baseball Giants fans will still remember him.
Terrell Owens was a great 49er, and he left like a total a-hole too, bashing Bill Walsh and forcing a bad trade. Its too bad, but its the choice he made.
The fans dont owe Pablo a thing. We cheered him on, even when he deserved to be booed. He went through horrible, prolonged slumps swinging through eye level fastballs over and over, was never in shape, and still the fans backed him loyally.
He set the mood for the 2012 WS with that game 1 against Verlander, but he wasnt the only reason we won. We were the better team.
Lets not forget that Pablo was a 12-15 HR guy who drove in 80 runs a season. He wasnt a superstar. He had the potential, but chose to live it up in his spare time instead of work to get in shape. An underachiever.
To say that Bruce Bochy and Hunter Pence were the only people hed miss from SF is such a slap in the face to so many guys who made it possible for him to get the kind of money he did. Without guys like Posey and Bum, he has 0 rings, and no playoff performer reputation to land him close to 100 mil. He wouldve just been a fat .290 hitter with 15 HR power on a mediocre team.
The Giants even offered him MORE than Boston to stay last minute, but he said he had made up his mind to leave before the 2014 season even started. They did everything for him, and he spit in their faces on the way out.
Like Aubrey Huff said, Pablo was bitter that the Giants made him get on a treadmill. Im thinking he's probably regretting turning down that 100 mil. to stay right about now. Hes just an out of shape player robbing his team blind with his salary, in a market that is ruthless to guys like him. The Panda hats have been replaced with middle fingers out east.
