Sorry mate i probably overstated the frequency at which it happens. Muffed punts happen more frequently in rugby league because the kicks can be contested by the kicking team.
Muffed or "knocked on" kickoffs happen much more rarely, probably only a few times per season per team.
It is strange more are muffed in the NRL to NFL. The ball is bigger so it should be easier to see and catch.
Perhaps because guys are not all specialist catchers and returners. But in NRL it is usually the role of the full back to catch the bombs and deep kick offs.
Every smart full back will jump up to catch the ball with the "no touch catcher in the air" rule. Next thing you know is they will let them do the Aussie Rules thing of jumping on the other players shoulder.
