Makes no sense. I don't know why they will do that.
Sure it does, teams will give Indy a garbage offer just to have George for a rental and try to convince him to stick around after the season. By trading away pieces that they have to get rid of anyways, the Lakers get a jump on the whole situation.
To have space for two max FA's next year, Clarkson, Randle and Lopez all need to GTFO. I think ultimately the PG trade will get worked out with Randle plus two 1st rounders going back to Indy.
Lopez is expiring contract. So, they don't HAVE to do something there.
But, if you blow your chest full of picks to trade for PG now...how are you going to get rid of that ugly Deng contract? I've to believe Lakers won't be stupid enough to trade Lonzo or Ingram just to get rid of a contract.
Honestly...I think they should keep Randle too. I think he's gonna be a really good player. He's only 22 and at his size - he can play PF when the team is big and can play center if need to go small. He has ability to run a break...pass on the run...and get his own shot too from PF/C position. That's not easy to find. His cap hold next summer will only be 5.5M (and then they can extend him before the season and go over cap).
If Lakers have only Ingram, Lonzo, Larry Nance Jr., Zubac, and Randle on the roster next season - they'll have only around 20-21M on their books. That should be their goal imho. Keep those players...trade Clarkson and Deng with assets attached to them. To beat Warriors - you need at least a big 3 with couple solid pieces.
With 82M in space...you can get almost 3 max contracts...and then you've a chance to do something in playoffs.
