How anyone could say this is anything but highway robbery is beyond me. Cavs won this trade by a mile and a half.
Completely agree with this.
I think this is a pretty fair trade. Isaiah Thomas is pretty worthless after this season - he's statistically one of the best PGs in the league, but he's a defensive liability. He deserves to be paid a max contract, but he's not the kind of superstar who is a bargain on a max deal. He's more than 3 years older than Irving (turns 29 in February) and I doubt the Celtics wanted to give a supermax deal to a sub-6 foot PG who may not age well into his 30s.
On the other hand, Irving is not eligible for a supermax deal after being traded, is only 25 years old, and should age a lot better than Thomas given his size, handles, and shooting. The Celtics get the overwhelmingly most valuable player in this trade and they have plenty of depth to give up Crowder after signing Gordon Hayward (Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum need minutes).
The unprotected 2018 first round pick is the highlight of the trade for the Cavs, but the Celtics still own 2 2018 first round picks (Celtics, Lakers) and 3 2019 first round picks (Celtics, Grizzlies, Clippers). They were never going to draft that many players - they saw their chance to get a superstar in Kyrie Irving and they took it. This only backfires if the Nets pick ends up being top 3 and turns into an NBA superstar.
PGs that any team would take over Thomas include:
Paul
Westbrook
Wall
Curry
Lilliard
Irving
Conley
Lowry
