Guaranteed chips are fun, but it's also fun watching your home grown talent work together and become more than the sum of their parts. Would have been tougher, but they still could have won more chips without KD. They were a shot away from back to back, and they really didn't play well at all that series.
Id love to know how Steph is "saving himself". His 28.9 PPG is the 2nd highest of his career. The 34.8 minutes per game is the most he has played in 5 seasons. The 5.2 rebounds per game is the 2nd highest average of his career as well. So, how again is he saving himself when he is out there?
No one has ever said that the Warriors couldnt have won another title without KD assuming they had kept Barnes or gotten another great player to take his place. But it is pure stupidity for anyone to ever suggest that the Warriors are better off without Durant or that the teams that past 2 years were not better than the Warriors 1st title team.
I think its also crazy to suggest that Klay and Draymond have suffered because of KD's presence on the team. I mean, go look at the stats in 2016 and 2017 with KD on the team. Klay's FG% was higher than ever, 3 pt % higher than ever, points, assists, rebounds, steals all virtually the same with or without Durant. My guess is Klay would laugh in your face if you suggested that to him. Same with Draymond as his assists, steals, rebounds, and blocks were just as good as ever with KD on his team. His points declined 3 points per game from his peak year but that was certainly to be expected by adding a super scorer like Durant.
You really want to know why the Warriors are "struggling" this year. It isnt KD's impact on the others or Steph taking it easy. It is simply the lack of interior presence on defense and the massive amounts of turnovers. The result .... the Dubs have gone from the 2nd highest rated defense in the NBA 2 years ago to the 16th now. And, they are 27th in the league in giving up points off turnovers.
