never heard of him. Maybe he's like a 7th/Scratch level player? His bro is on the Ducks so that's a cool little rivalry.

Seems like an odd trade, defenseman for defenseman, and especially considering Wood was one of the best AHL prospects on D that we had. But I mean, Carrick was on the Calder Cup team and was super productive too. He shoots left, Wood shoots right. Did we need another LD? I mean, on the right we've already got Burns, Karlsson, Heed, Prout, and then prospects Merkley, Desimone, and Roy. Everyone else is a lefthanded D.
Also, here's an article on Merkley pushing for a roster spot: https://www.nhl.com/sharks/news/san-jose-sharks-prospect-ryan-merkley/c-308363848
I think I read somewhere saying that Wood's skating was still not good enough and he was getting older as a prospect. I guess that would be concerning seeing how the Sharks have had that issue in the past with jumbo D prospects. I like the idea of having giant Dmen, but sounds like Carrick has a better shot of actually playing in the NHL.
I think they'll keep Merkley up as long as they can just to give him experience. I'd be surprised if he got called up full time this early.
This article talks about what you mentioned as far as skating goes, among other things:

To that point of the bolded, yeah true, I'll take the better player any day. Even though Carrick is 25 and Wood is still only 23, it seems like right now the former is the better player. As noted in the article, Carrick has been a superior offensive player both in the regular season and playoffs, and is a leader and physical presence on the ice, even if he's not 6-5 235. Almost makes you wonder why the Canes traded him. Maybe they were looking for a more stay at home defender and felt he fit that mold better for them.
While I kind of want to see what Carrick could do in the NHL, it's true that Desimone, Ferraro, Middleton and Merkley are much more in line for time. Oddly the writer doesn't mention Merkley at all.
