I know I am not a hockey expert but it just seems to me that the Sharks can never win a Stanley Cup unless they get a very good goalie and defensemen who actually play defense. But again, no expert but just my observation from watching them play about 10 times this year.
Reminds me a bit of the Harbaalke-Roman Niners. "Niners will never win until Alex Smith can connect deep and they have receivers that can outrun and out jump everyone."
IMO Sharks aren't ideally built for the end-to-end game of the new NHL. They have slower players and rely on possession offense. They have emphasized defense in the past, but then their offense gets suffocated. More recently, they are selling out to keep possession of the puck, which kills the defense.
They do well in the regular season because they are bigger than the quick teams and quicker than some of the bigger teams. But, most playoff teams are just as big and quicker. They've never had a good mix of coaching, physicality, and special teams to compensate for that. IMO Vegas has better better in all three.
