"For him to pitch the last game, if that's the case, that would be quite the honor." The Giants now have Madison Bumgarner lined up for a pretty emotional final game: https://t.co/MpBLATXlQQ

He did have some health problems last year that caused him to miss some games.Originally posted by Niners99:Originally posted by mayo49:Why is he quitting? Too old?
His management style is outdated in the modern game. The Giants are going to hire someone who is more in tune with the style that baseball is headed towards. He would likely prefer to keep managing, but he realizes the game has kind of passed him by, and its time to call it a career.
His contract is up after this season, and the Giants are going a different direction, so hes just going out on his terms by retiring.

He said his health problems were fixed, and he feels as good as ever. Its not health related.

Which makes me believe he isnt actually retiring retiring. I feel like he was told he wasnt getting his contract renewed, and that was that.

I think its both. He is old and doesn't move well. I think mutually they are ready to do something else. And Boch gets to be treated like Giants royalty from now on.

Right. Agreed. But I have never explicitly heard Bochy say "retire." But tbh, I havent paid tremendous attention all year. He very well could have said it and I missed it, but I havent heard it.
The only reason I say that hypothetically, lets say a team with a lot of talent that underperformed calls him up this offseason with an offer. I would assume Boch would do it, or at the very least strongly consider it. I have always seen this as Boch's Giants career is ending, not necessarily his career career.

"I rooted against the team because my ego was in full control and if we lost, then I could get out of there," Zito said. "It would a) prove they couldn't do it without me, and b) take me out of the situation because I was so miserable coming to the field every day.
"I was so deep in shame. I wanted out of that situation so bad."
He destroyed his relationship with his close friend, former closer Brian Wilson.
"He became the most famous guy in baseball while my career was tanking, and I literally couldn't handle it," Zito said of the All-Star closer. "I pushed him away."
Zito was miserable.
"It was really hard to admit," Zito told The Chronicle's Ann Killion.
